As he was so very young still I wonder if he did not come out here to join other, possibly distant relatives.  Who was he living with between 1941 and 1947?

Interestingly I see that their son Robert Charles was baptized as Robert Charles Alexander and with the surname of Crompton.

Michael, the father, died in 1890 in the Orange Free State and was a retired goaler so it looks like your suspicions are possibly correct.
