Pleasure - sorry I mis-spelt the surname initially - Earl without the 'e', instead of Earle.

I have found that Thomas married Jane Sampson on 9/4/1849.  He was a Shoemaker.  The witness were David Sampson and Jane Pitt.

Emily Ann Earl was born to Thomas and Jane Earl on 28 June 1850.  She was baptised on 21 August 1850 in the Trinity Church, Grahamstown. (Presbyterian Parish)

Hope this helps

Hello everyone

I've been silent for many months but I am still trying to trace Rowes and Milletts who went out to Johannesburg around the turn of the last century. Right now I'd appreciate a little help with regard the NAAIRS database.

Given that using the TAB database I have made a hit with a reference, volume number etc... what do I do to access the documents referred to?

Best wishes

Peter in Hove East Sussex UK

Peter I would suggest that you request www.eggsa.org to obtain the documents for you for a small fee.  This will be quicker than trying to obtain them through the National Archives.

Good luck.

Thanks very much Valdi.  Although I have tried the link all I can come up with is the reference to his will.  Possibly this means that there were no death duties, or (more than likely) I am not searching correctly.  However I shall continue trying.

I cannot express how much I appreciate all of this.

It is amazing what one request on Rootschat can achieve!

You are absolutely fantastic!  I had looked at national archives and seen some insurance but it had been done either by James or by Ann - James's widow (i.e. after 1849).  I did not look at each one - just assumed they were all done by them. (very stupid I now realize).

The burial in 1849 was my James Woods.  I managed to obtain a photograph of the tombstone from the Friends of the Cemetery.  Interestingly enough after he died his wife Ann remarried a Skeet.  She is buried, together with a couple of her children by Skeet, together with James.  True love obviously!

Have a great 2013 - I shall now that I have got a step further back!

Thank you so much for the link.

I was hoping that perhaps there was some connection and that the 's' had been lost or added at some time.  With my James having married into a fairly prominent family of the time, and not being able to find his birth anywhere I think I was just grabbing at straws hoping to find something to latch onto that could explain how they had met.  :'(

Very frustrating this family tree business, but will carry on looking!
