Lancashire / Thomas & William Hassall, Stalybridge c1853
« on: Tuesday 11 November 14 15:30 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All

I am stuck banging my head against a brick wall. This is rather convoluted (as ever in family history!) but stick with it. My 3x Great-Grandfather was John Hassall b1803 Stalybridge and baptised at St Michaels Church in the neighbouring Ashton-under-Lyne to Susannah Hassall, father unknown. Between 1803 and 1815 there were 4 other baptisms at this church to Susannah Hassall of Stalybridge, all with 'fathers unknown'! My assumption has always been that this is the same Susannah Hassall and these were all siblings.

My problem/queries would be:- since there are no records of Susannah Hassall applying to the parish for money in the 'bastardy accounts' that she is likely to have either had support from ther father(s) of these children and/or from her family?

Secondly I have recently discovered records from 1853-5 in the Register of Voters Lists for Stalybridge. They list a Thomas and a William Hassall as having wholly or partly an interest in the 'property at 5 Hully Street, Stalybridge'. This property is where my Grandmother was born and lived as a child. Her own mother, Lucy Hassall (nee Lever) lived at this house until she died in 1962. So it is a fair assumption that this Thomas and William Hassall who owned the house in the 1850s were related to us. While there is a William Hassall among the illegitimate siblings of John Hassall (b1803) to Susannah Hassall, I can find no record of a Thomas Hassall in Stalybridge at that period?! Perhaps Thomas was the sone of William Hassall (b1809)?

An additional question is presumably there must have been a business in the family for them to have made enough money to have bought the house at 5 Hulley Street?

I really hope this makes sense as a series of questions as I don't have the exact details to hand and have typed this entirely from memory :S

Many thanks in advance

Lancashire / 1851 Census Liverpool - Hassall
« on: Tuesday 02 September 14 13:53 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if anyone can help as I.don't have access to 1851 Census today? I am looking for an Edward Hassall who I believe was resident at 5 McKee Street, Liverpool in 1853. I am just hoping he was at this address in 1851 at the time of the Census.
If anyone can help by doing a quick search for him and letting ne know I'd very much appreciate the help.
Unfortunately I have no idea of Edawrd's d.o.b. or age but just need to know if he was at this address. I think he would have been born in Stalybridge, which is sometimes classed as Cheshire and sometimes Lancashire.
Mamy thanks in advance

Cheshire / Susannah HASSALL - Audlem
« on: Thursday 29 May 14 13:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I wonder if anyone can hep me trace an ancestor of mine? My 4x Great-Grandmother was Susannah Hassall. The info I have records her year and place of birth as b1775, Audlem, Cheshire. At some point she moved to Stalybridge as she had her illegitimate son, John baptised in Ashton-Under-Lyne, St Michael's church in 1804. John went on to become my 3x Great Grandfather.
She had at least 3 other illegitimate children, eventually marrying a Joseph Wilkinson in Stalybridge in 1835. She died in 1845 also in Stalybridge.

If anyone could help me trace the Susannah's origins in the Audlem area I would be xtremely grateful for any clues as I am stuck and unable to make any progress.

Many thanks

Jason

Cheshire Lookup Requests / Hassall Family - Audlem
« on: Wednesday 14 May 14 18:37 BST (UK)  »
Hi All,

I am a little bit stuck on an ancestor of mine. The person I am looking for is Susannah Hassall. I believe she was born in Audlem around 1778/9. I don't have any details of who her parents were sorry. If it helps you to work backwards, Susannah went on to live in Stalybridge (which is half in Lancs and half in Cheshire), where she had at least 1 illegitimate son, John Hassall (b.1804). I believe she had at least 3 other children illegitimately. The children were all baptised in Ashton-under-Lyne parish church with 'father unknown' stated in each case, mother 'Susannah Hassall of Staleybridge'.

Susannah went on to marry a Joseph Wilkinson in Stalybridge in the 1830s and she died there in 1845.

Susannah is my 4x Great-Grandmother on my paternal side. I would be really grateful if anyone can find out anything about her early life and/or who she came to Stalybridge from the Audlem area with?

Many thanks in advance

Hi
I wonder if anyone has any information regarding my Watson ancestors in Macduff? My Grandfather was Innes McKay b1919 in Whitehills. His father was Innes McKay and his mother was Margaret Ann Watson,  both parents born in Macduff in the 1870-1880s?
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,

England / John Alfred Wright
« on: Saturday 19 October 13 13:35 BST (UK)  »
Re: Annie Louisa Wright

I am looing for the above relative of mine on the 1881 Census. John Alfred Wright was b.1860 in Burton Upon Trwent, Staffs. On the 1871 Census he was living in Hulme with his parents Edwin and Ann Wright and his 7 siblings (No:4 Drake Street, Hulme, Manchester).
I know he marries Lillian Taylor in 1886 in Chorlton, Manchester and by the Census of 1891 they have moved to Liverpool, but his whereabouts on the 1881 Census remain a mystery?
Hoping someone can solve these related mysteries. I suspect one resolution will follow the other......

England / Annie Louisa Wright Census 1881
« on: Friday 18 October 13 16:12 BST (UK)  »
Hi all I am desperately looking for Annie Louisa Wright b.1872 in Hulme, Manchester to Edwin & Ann Wright. I have found Edwin living with two of Annie Louisas siblings in 1881, but no sign of Annie and her mother Ann. Ann Wright (nee Bennett) was born in 1829 in Rosliston, Derbyshire & I believe died in 1883 in Bradford, Yorkshire. Though this is only a hunch. Annie Louisa & her elder brother Charles James Wright both married in Bradford, Yorks in 1893!
Really hope someone out there can help me on this.
Regards to all

Lancashire / Wright Family Members

Hello all

I'm hoping for some help regarding two of my ancestors from a Wright family. I have all the parents and other siblings on every census, however I'm missing two of the siblings on either Census, marriage and/or death records after the Census of 1871.

The details thus far are:-

1871 - 4 Drake Street, Hulme
Edwin Wright head b 1825 Burton Upon Trent
Ann Wright wife b1829 Rosliston
Sarah Maria Wright dau b1852 Burton
Frances Amelia Wright dau b1854 Burton
Edwin Bennett Wright son b1856 Burton
George Clement Wright son b1858 Burton
John Alfred Wright son b1860 Burton
Minnie Edith Wright dau b1862 Burton
Ernest Henry Wright son b1866 Stapenhill, Derbys
Charles James Wright son b1868 Burton
Annie Louisa Wright dau b1872 Hulme

I cannot find the whereabouts of either John Alfred, Minnie Edith or Annie Louisa on the Census of 1881??? Annie Louisa does marry James Poole in Bradford in 1893 and goes on to have children with him, but as for the other two siblings they are becoming a mystery........

If anyone can knock down this brickwall for me it would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Jason
