Thank's MC...yes.poor James...but then he was a naughty boy!! He was only 17 when deported.I plan to go over to Tasmania in the near future,as I feel a " calling".The Archives were fantastic and did send a copy of his record with description and tattoos etc. His indents ( whatever they were) did not survive. We have a transcript of the trial as reported at the time. My brother first came across the details of the case when visiting Tasmania 20 years ago,and read that he was pretty well educated at the time, and was actually allowed to teach the children to read and write. I have not managed to find information about that myself.Something went wrong because the archives sent a copy of his punishment leading up to his hanging, and he was absent without leave and neglectful of the duty bell, with hard labour and chains for 3 months!!!
It must have been sad to look out over Dead Mans Island....did everyone get a cross or were they for members of staff only?
How did you subscribe to the mailing list MC?
Well thank's again and cheers for now...thank's for the offer of keeping an eye open for James, who went under the false name of George Thomas. 8)

Dear MC many thank's for your reply.
My convict , unfortunately was hanged in 1838. His name was James Atterall ( a derivative we think of the name Arthrell...I am still trying to track down his birth if I can so that I can then trace his line etc).
presumably he would have been placed in a lime pit,un marked grave on Dead Mans Island...so I will never find his grave. I don't think he married as there was no mention of a wife or family...so thankyou for the offer of access to the Tasmanian BMD...but I wouldn't expect there to be anything? :(
Cheers Dawn ;D

Hi Joan and thank's for the reply! ;D
No I have not looked at the surgeons report for the ship, the Master was geo Binnie and the Surgeon was Colin.A.Browning.I had some great info from the Archives Offce Tasmania, but that was about 4 years ago now.
Did you gain access to the records at the Mitchell Library on line about the prison hulks at Portsmouth?...and my other question would be how did you get to read the Surgeons records? terminology is a bit confusing for me...I was told by the Archives office Tasmania that the indent of his voyage did not survive...would this have included the surgeons report I wonder?
Sorry to throw back all these questions Joan ::)

What an interesting thread...and goodluck with your " cold case", research Lynden. After all these years it is still sad to read of the fate of poor Sarah, and even sadder to think who ever did it got away with it :(.
It would be strange if it turned out that researchers on this site were descendants of  Hurd Maggs and Sparrow.
Fantastic to see that you are being helped by fellow researchers....I hope more evidence comes to light, and I will follow your progress!

Thankyou folks for the suggestions.
I particularly liked the tip from Berlin Bob and will certainly be chasing it up.Actually my brother turns 60 in March and my Dad is 83 in Novemebr so I may well chase up a copy of The Times for those too!
Thanks also Gemmac for the specific dates...I liked the Glen Millar reference as my mum was serving in the WRNS during the war, so Glenn Millar would have ben popular at the time.
Thanks again everyone ;)
