The Common Room / Re: Who is this gentleman?
« on: Monday 02 July 07 10:26 BST (UK) »
Hi PrueM.
I had on idea that the last 5 posts had been posted, never received any notification for this topic??.
Have just received an e-mail from ( Mr John Scott ) the person looking for this information on Charles Lyons. It has been 11 months since he last contacted me! so I thought he had lost interest? He now has a NZ address and I shall keep you informed.
Hi Little Mag.
Strange you talk about Carpal Tunnel Syndrome , I have to have Wrist Surgery on both hands for Carpal Tunnel.
No Charles Lyons did not have Carpal Tunnel according to John Scott and is a Red Herring.
Regards Reg.

The Common Room / Re: Would Mary Ann be called Daisy

Hi
I don't know if this has any bearing . But I remember my G-Mother telling me that the father of the youngest daughter would call her Daisy(no matter what her first name was) she would have to do all the house work for the family . Note-- a lot of servants where called Daisy

The Common Room / Re: looking for Ethal Gotobed
« on: Friday 01 June 07 23:33 BST (UK) »
Hi Nanny Jan;Robert;Elizabeth and Hackstaple.
The wonders of RootsChats, I have received information from a very kind person that was brousing through Rootschats (not a member) and dose not want to have there name recorded.
There was a hardback book "A portrait of Woman in an English Village" Fenwomen by Mary Chamberlain. printed about 1975.
It gives information about the life of Ethel Gotobed and other people in the village.
I have ordered the book from the library.
If you read this MS Xxxx Xxxxxx Thank you so very much for your help.

Hi,
Thank you both for your reply. Fens Gislea seems to bring back some memory of a long conversation I had with a wonderful elderly lady with down to earth ideas , this would have been around 1955 in a small teahouse think it was in Cambridgeshire . The coach I was on stopped at this place for a break. I do remember some of our conversation and the strong effect produced on my mind (I would have been 19 and she around 75) She told me about the Village she lived in and about her friend. Her friend was Ethal Gotobed.
Thinking back it was Fens Gislea-Cambridgeshire She said that Ethal never married and run I think the village newsagency.
Do remember something about her saying Ethal would help her Father in the Butchers shop and she did not like helping him in the slaughter-house.
When the coach left we parted, but from time to time I wonder about this Lady and her friend! (don't really expect to get much information on the info provided but you never know??)
Have checked up on the info the two of you provided but nothing conclusive but shall keep it in mind.
