Family History Beginners Board / Re: John Unite b.1819 St Martin in the Fields

In 1871 he was making marquees, ropes and tents, living in Askew Villa, Hammersmith, London with his wife Charlotte Eliza and children George and Fanny.
The Unite family also made shop blinds for many years. I can tell you anything you want to know about the Unite, or Unitt or Unett families. I've researched them all.

I'm looking for census entries for my great grandfather John Unite b.1819 St Martin in the Fields.
I have him in 1851 surname transcribed as Ninete, described as a master brick (?) maker living Paddington with wife Charlotte and his 3 children Frank John, George Duthy and Fanny Martha.
In 1871 he was a marquee, rope and tent maker, 1881 tarpaulin maker and 1891 rich cloth/tent maker.
I can find no trace of him in 1841 or 1861, despite a lengthy search. Such an unusual surname is often wrongly transcribed. Any help would be most welcome.

Thanks to everyone for the input.
In the absence of alternative evidence, I must assume that the publicity Miriam Kate put forward for her origins was a fabrication, just as she stated her lover was her brother. There is no sister for her on the censuses, but William had a sister, Hannah Almira. Maybe Miriam was talking about her. A Welsh Baptist minister of irish descent as a father, seems to be a fabrication also, although I will keep looking. Very interesting to read the newspaper articles. Thanks again.

Family History Beginners Board / Miriam Kate Williams b.1874 Bristol
« on: Wednesday 20 January 16 08:02 GMT (UK)  »
I am looking into the origins of Miriam Kate who became part of the double act Atlas and Vulcana.
Wikipedia says she was born in Wales of Irish parents, that her father was a preacher and that she worked in a tannery. Can anybody find evidence for these facts?
I have her as born in Bristol in 1874, with parents Hamilton Dauncey Williams (b.1851 Weston super Mare) and Elizabeth Taylor Harvey (b.1846 Torquay). In 1881 Miriam Kate was living with her widowed mother in Clifton, Gloucs. In 1891 she was in Wales as a servant in Newport, not far for Cardiff. In 1901 she was living in the house of William Hedley Roberts, whose stage name was Atlas. The adopted daughter in that household, Nora Althea, was actually the child of William and Miriam, who went on to have 5 more children together.
In 1911 four children (Winifred Pomeroy - Alice Maud's own daughter - and Mona Victoria, Arthur Victor Atlas and William Hector Atlas, children of Miriam Kate) were living in Munster Rd, Fulham with Alice Maud Roberts, 'mother' and visitor Elizabeth Taylor Harvey. The interpretation of this seems to be that Alice Maud Roberts was William Hedley's wife, who was looking after her own daughter and 3 of the children of her husband and his mistress, being visited by the mother of said mistress.
Can anyone help add to this picture and/or verify Wikipedia's version?

Many thanks for the information. I've now got to work out why the family dropped the surname Bull and went with Johnson of subsequent censuses!!

Family History Beginners Board / James Johnson
« on: Sunday 03 January 16 06:23 GMT (UK)  »
I'm looking for the marriage of James Johnson, b.1845 Wellington, New Zealand to Caroline Unknown.
They had 3 daughters - Ellen Beatrice Johnson (whose additional surname on her marriage certificate was Bull??), b.1871, Lilian b.1877 and Alice b.1880. All 3 girls born in Wandsworth.
I can't find the family in 1891 but Ellen married Richard Lane in 1892 from 80 North St, Clapham, father James Johnson, gas fitter.
I can't positively identify a death for Caroline or James, and can't find Lilian and Alicce after 1881.
Can anyone help?

Family History Beginners Board / James Henry Rendle
« on: Friday 18 December 15 07:01 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find James Henry Rendle in 1891. I can't find a census entry for any of the family. I'm hoping it might shed some light onto unanswered question about his later life.
He was born in 1868 in Plymouth to James Edwin Rendle and Emma Jane Searle. In 1871 and 1881 he was living in Plymouth with his parents - James Edwin was a blacksmith.
In 1892 James Henry married Laura Louisa Kerswell in Plymouth.
In 1901 he was a plasterer in Willesden, London.
In 1911 he returned to Plymouth with Laura and lived was living with her parents.
In 1912 he appears to have done a runner and gone to Canada, where he set up home with Alice Mary Castell Bellamy, and with whom he had two daughters. In 1921 James Henry is a janitor in Edmonton, Canada and describes himself as married and Alice is calling herself Rendle.
In 1936 Alice (Rendle) returned to UK with her 3 children. No sign of James. Where did he die?
Supplementary questions:
Did James Henry marry Alice in Canada? I can't find a record of it. Had his first wife died or was the 'marriage' bigamous? What happened to Laura Louisa (nee Kerswell)?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank you very much for all that, Isobel. I too spent the day searching and came up with much of the same information. I actually used credits in Scotland's People to check the marriage of Jessie's parents. They were Margaret, nee Fyfe and Thomas Fyfe, and they turned out to be second cousins. Jessie's grandmother was Janet (Jessie) Paterson and Jessie's middle name is Paterson.  I have yet to research that connection.
I didn't find John Russell in 1901 so that was helpful.
Thanks again.
