How do I find the British Newspapers entries you mention, Maureen? This is all a bit 'off piste' for me.
The address on the birth certificate only says 4 Grovehill Rd, Redhill. I did find The Terrace as part of the address on the 1891 census.

I haven't found the summary book. If you are right, I do apologise! That just makes the plot thicker! If it were these days we would think it might be a squat! I'll probably never find the real answer.
Thanks for you help though,

It's not marked as uninhabited. It just doesn't appear in the sequence of houses. No 2 has Reginald Bishop living there and no 6 has a family called Richardson.
The birth date I'm researching is 12th May 1912. The birth certificate names the mother but no father. The mother was a governess living in London and my guess is that someone arranged for her to have the baby discretely. In 1901 the property was owned by a retired surgeon with 5 daughters, one of whom was a teacher. There seemed to be a small connection there.
It's not really that important, but I hate it when I can't fill in all the gaps!

Many thanks for all your helpful replies. I have found the relevant address, which one of you points out has no entry. I'm fairly sure it was a home for unmarried mothers, as it is the address on the birth certificate I am researching. As such I guess it would be classified as an institution and in the past I have found these establishments to have their own census form.
So my next question is - where do I find that? The enumeration district is 18 and I have looked at the beginning and end of the census pages without success. Any help would be much appreciated.

I've been trying to find the relevant enumeration district so I can go through all the pages (I am a member of Ancestry). But the 1911 census (unlike all the previous ones) doesn't identify the roads to be visited on page one.
I've found who lived there in 1901 (John Grenville Moyle, retired surgeon) but he wasn't there in 1911. The address given was 4 The Terrace, Grovehill Rd, Redhill.
I will probably have to find people in Redhill in 1911 and keep looking till I find someone living in Grovehill.

Many thanks everyone, especially Stan. Now I have William. Yes, I have read the Partleton file, very well put together and very graphic. Glad I didn't live then!

London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Feather Court, St Mary le Strand, London
« on: Monday 29 September 14 09:55 BST (UK)  »
I am looking for William Bywaters (b.1823) in 1881. In 1871 and 1891 he was living at Feather(s) Court, St Mary le Strand. London. In 1888 he was on the electoral roll at that address. Despite going through all 4 EDs for that area, I can find no 1881 census record for that address. It was supposed to be one of the most dangerous streets in London in 1841. Could it be that the enumerator didn't dare enter? I'd be very grateful for any help on this.

Yes that's true. We'll probably never know.
