World War Two / Re: RAF 20 Squadron. September 1941
« on: Friday 12 April 24 09:50 BST (UK)  »
Just a quick update to say that my dad's RAF record arrived by email yesterday.  Some of the information is still redacted eg Home address, next of kin, civil occupation etc.  Along with the record, there is a list of abbreviations and their meanings which will be useful as I go through the details.  Thanks to everyone who has helped.  By the way, my original post was a photo - it did have the look of a seaside boarding house...well it was!  His record indicates he was in Blackpool for his training.
Many thanks once again

Thank you so much. I've just found the death of my grandfather's sister. She was only 19. Everyone said she had been run over by a cart....well it turns out she commited suicide by swallowing carbolic acid!

The website you need to use is

Probatesearch.service.gov.uk

You have to create an account.  If you have done all this, check the spelling of the person you want. I couldn't find one yesterday, but the way I had spelled the surname wasn't quite the same as on the will.

Women were a huge part of the pottery industry.  Hand painted decoration and gilding were highly skilled occupations which were mostly done by women

I have just spoken to my aunt who is 95. She started work when she was 14 in 1942 at a pottery called Sampson Bridgewood in Longton. She was a 'junior' in the office, so it was part way through the war. She told me that Sampson Bridgewood were still producing pottery (it was earthenware, rather than china) but it was not decorated when she worked there during the war years.  They produced a lot of mugs, plates etc that were sent to army barracks in the UK.  She had to type the labels for the crates and she can remember one address was in Didcot.  The ware was created up using straw to protect the products. During the war she had to get a certificate from the vet to say the straw was safe.  She also had to get a certificate from the local solicitor (cost 2/6) to verify the contents of the crates.  She can only vouch for Sampson Bridgewood but I hope this helps

Well done Trish. I love these 'Where are they' threads. I never solve them!  I should have got this one though. I live in Llandudno and walk by the hotel almost every day!
