Canada Ocean Arrivals - arriving June 1923 - Sybil Evelyn Cottrill (aged 28 years and single)  Teacher. Object in going to Canada :- "to settle"  - going to join Miss N Denny, Queen Margaret's School. Duncan. British Columbia.  Father listed as F Cottrill. High View House, Belmont Road, Bolton. Lancs.

UK and Ireland, Outward Passenger Lists, 1890-1960 - should have departed 4 th May 1923 - Megantic to Montreal. Canada.  (crossed thru on passenger manifest - must have gone slightly later - as per above.)

Both Henry (aged 61 years)and Sybil Thorne (aged 40 years) return from South Africa 1 st August 1934 -

Sybil Cottrill had immigrated to South Africa as a teacher 15 January 1932 - Southampton to Cape Town on the Armadale Castle

Sandra

Very interesting indeed. I hadn’t been aware of Sybil who obviously didn’t pursue a career in the family business and forged a career as a teacher overseas. Unlike the rest of her family there isn’t a baptism record as far as I can see and no trace so far on the 1901 census. Perhaps she was with another household or away at private school. Thanks again for your assistance which is most appreciated. I visited the ‘High View’ address today which still stands and is a grand building… Jayhen

Interesting that Felix Cottrill married Elizabeth Ann Stephen in Hampshire 1907 - wonder if there was a connection between Elizabeth and Lucy ?  Maybe coincidence ?

STEPHEN    Elizabeth Ann        S. Stoneham    2c   100
COTTRILL    Felix        St. Stoneham    2c   100

That’s what I’m trying to work out. I initially thought Lucy may have died whilst on holiday or whilst visiting friends but it now appears they may have moved there. Had Felix retired from the Cotton Spinning business?..

The 1911 census shows Felix (53 years - colliery co) and Elizabeth (43years - cotton spinning) as Director and Managing Director. So they were both involved with business and living in St Annes On Sea. Lytham

Yes, I noted that but would like to know how long Felix & Lucy were in Hampshire? Did Felix meet his second wife down there?.. can’t see any electoral listings or trade directories so far following Lucy’s death..

I see that Felix left £1,000 to St Georges Hospital, London when he died.   :-\

Thanks for that, I haven’t seen his will. He was a member of a large wealthy family engaged in the Cotton Spinning industry in Bolton during the 19th Century.. Regards Jayhen

Hugh was only 2 years old so it would not be uncommon for a better off family to have a nurse helping to look after the child.

Absolutely. Thank you for your response. Regards Jayhen

She might have been in Bournemouth “for the good of her health”.  Sea Air .
The death certificate will give the cause of death.

Yes, very true. I’ve noted that on the 1901 Census there was a ‘Lady’s nurse’ living with the family..

Many thanks

Many thanks Sandra. Hoping there may have been more information as she was quite young at the time of her death and belonged to a privileged family.

Her death certificate will show if an Inquest was held; it will also give the name of the Coroner.

Thanks for that, i was Initially wondering  if there was any publication in the press.
