Down / Adoptions
« on: Friday 03 August 18 19:20 BST (UK)  »

This is probably a very long shot but I'll ask anyway.
I saw a program about babies being bought and sold in Edinburgh in the 1800s.The babies were advertized in newspapers.
My great gran had a baby in 1874 called Easter(Esther) McCafferty, she already had a son William James and she went on to have another daughter,Mary. She didn't marry their father until 1877,they then went to live in Glasgow.Easter was not with them and I can't find a death or anything about her any where so,I was wondering if she was adopted via an advert in a paper Annie would have had to get someone to write it as she was illiterate, maybe someone said they'd help her with the baby and put the ad without Annie knowing.Or maybe my imagination is running away with me!!!
My great gran was Annie McCafferty, she married Thomas Gunning. If he wasn't the father of Easter he may have insisted she was adopted.
I don't know the siblings Annie had,one of them could've taken her.If I can find her siblings I could look for a child born at the right time.Maybe her mother,Esther McCafferty, nee Hollinger, took her.
This is one of two puzzles I have in my tree and I'd love to solve it
Grateful for any help or thoughts from folk who know how things worked in Co Down at that time.

Down / James Gunning
« on: Friday 01 June 18 21:34 BST (UK)  »
There was a James Gunning, born 1913 in Newtownards, who, together with his wife Dorrie, was a missionary in Brazil. His parents were James and Huston Gunning(nee Geddes)they married in !909,I don't know if they had other children.I can't get any futher back as James is such a common name.
I'm curious to know if he was related to me in any way.My ancestors had big families so it's possible that he was related.Of course I could be mistaken.
  Any ideas appreciated,thanks

Down / Mary Gunning
« on: Monday 12 March 18 16:51 GMT (UK)  »

My great x2 gran was Mary Gunning nee Snodden.Having recieved her husband's death certificate,I applied to the Registry Office for Mary's but it seems they are unable to find it.
On Ancestry it gives her death as being in 1896 in Caslereagh aged 74 but on Geneaology Ireland it gives a Mary Gunning dying in 1879 in Newtownards at the age of 70.That age isn't really right but it could had been a mistake as the age of 60 would be fine.
Please can anyone help me find her death date so I can order her death certificate which will also tell me her parent's names. Thank you

Ireland / Mary Lavelle
« on: Friday 09 February 18 00:20 GMT (UK)  »
I'm helping research the maternal side of my friend's family. Her mother was Elizabeth Joyce born in Glasgow.I have traced quite a few of Joyces that were her ancestrors in Ireland but my friend said that on a trip to Ireland 1964/5 she met a lady called Mary Lavelle. This lady was living in a very modest house but she can't remember where. If I could find a link between Mary Lavelle and the Joyces it might solve the problem of who this lady was.
  Any help much appreciated

Down / Workhouses
« on: Friday 26 January 18 00:55 GMT (UK)  »

Today I recieved the death certificate for my great x 2 grandad,William Gunning. He died in 1898 in Newtownards Workhouse.I've spent the last 3 hours looking for the records for the workhouse but I've just gone round and round in circles. I was told that PRONI has them but I couldn't find them and the same with other Irish sites I tried.
Please can someone tell if I can see them and if so,where? I'd like to know why he had to go there when he had at least 1 son in Ards, also a daughter and a brother and sister.I'd also like to know how long he was in there before he died.He was a boot and shoe maker, according to Griffith's land records,William rented an expensive house in Conlig,I wonder what happened to that?
  Any help,much appreciated.
