Hello groom,

I think you have solved the start of my problem.....thank you.......especially the "Shoemaker" part, as in the 1881/1891 Census he is designated a Bootmaker/Master Bootmaker.

London and Middlesex / Middlesex: Richard HUNNS, born 1845 Bethnal Green

Hello,

I am trying to establish a Biography for Richard HUNNS as part of my research for a PhD and the following are some details that I think are correct:

1:   His mother was Susannah as in 1853 she was court when he was tried for stealing from his
      parents who lived in St. George's-in-the-East;
2:   She re-appeared in court with him in 1859 as an "accomplice" for receiving from him:
       she was sentenced to 12 months and he received 3 years penal servitude;
3;   I cannot find any details for the family in census returns for 1841, 1851, 1861 and 1871 but
      the 1881 Census shows John HUNNS age 61 born Worcester wife Susan age 52 born Bethnal
      Green living in Shoreditch.   Are these his parents?
4:   The 1881 and 1891 Census returns show a Richard HUNNS, born about 1845, married to Emily
      and a Bootmaker and there are entries for 2 sons being baptised.

I appreciate the details are slightly disjointed but I wonder if someone has access to local records that could prove his parents were as in 3. above and that he is the same Richard HUNNS in the 1881 and 1891 Census returns.   And pushing my luck.....add any further information for the missing years!!!

For the moment, thank you

Thank you for trying.

His name is too common methinks to hope for any real success.   Of course a Victorian Marriage/Death Certificate would probably be the only answer normally showing parental details.

Hello,

Charles GRAY, born 1829/1830 in Ipswich, Suffolk; parents John and Mary GRAY; 6 brothers and sisters, Mary (1822), James (1825), William (1827), Jane (1833), Thomas (1835) and George (1836).   Had been employed as a Mariner.

He arrived at Williamstown, Port Phillip, aboard the Marion on 25/01/1848 as an "Exile".

No other details....probably went North to the goldfields and never heard of again.   Can anyone please disprove that last comment?!!

For the moment,

Good Morning Claire,

I thought it only fair to SHC to explain how they probably arrived at the Quotation.   Each entry in the Admissions Register at the Society is normally double page.   I was asking for 10 entries, that is, 20 pages and therefore each page cost £20 to digitally photograph and process for transmission.

Justifiable?   Thank goodness I am not a Defence Barrister!!!

Take care and thank you for all your help.

Hello claire.t,

Are you sitting comfortably.

I asked SHC about a year ago to digitally photograph 10 entries in the Admission Register for 1855, one of whom was George TURNER.  I deleted the email quotation in disgust as from memory the figure was over £400....!!!!!!    I suppose they blame the CUTS??

Take care,

Hello claire.t,

The Surrey History Centre does indeed hold Admission Registers for the Society which you can readily obtain if you visit them......which I am unable to do.    Sadly, they are extremely expensive in research terms otherwise, as I found to my cost when I recently asked for a quotation on photographing, as they will not photocopy the documents.

It does look as though South Africa may be the answer, however.
