Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Lithuania to USA via England
« on: Sunday 24 May 09 22:15 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
apologies first- if this is the wrong place to post, please could someone redirect me  :).

I have a friend in USA who has asked me if I know where there may be any records of his ancestor.

The ancestor would have travelled from Lithuania c 1891. My friend has looked in passenger lists e.g. Castle Garden to no avail. He has USA census records.

My friend thinks that the ancestor would have travelled from Bremen to Hull and then Liverpool to USA.

Does anyone have any ideas please?
thanks

Hello,

In 1841 HO107; Piece 982;   Folio: 42; Page: 33 she has daughters Ann 6 yrs; Charlotte 2 yrs and Amelia 1 yr and goes on to have several more children.
I have one birth certificate for Caleb 1849 where Hannah's name is:

I can find nothing re Gorsman in Family Search and very little in Ancestry.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Modified message: I have reposted the picture as suggested by Irene.
It was too big to post at first so I have tried to reduce the size (of something?)
Thanks in advance for your patience.

The Lighter Side / another Ancestry transcription cracker!
« on: Saturday 28 July 07 10:20 BST (UK)  »
Over the last few days a few of us have been frantically searching for a possible surname Jude and I came across the surname Ida in the same area.
Ha! ha! - we delvers and diggers might think-a possible mistranscription.

Thomas Benn - wife and children Ida.

The enumerator had written /do to ditto the rest of the family- transcriber thought they were the Ida family.   ;D

As if it isn't difficult enough.

cheers everyone

World War One / WW1 SS Boorara Merchant Navy
« on: Tuesday 10 April 07 16:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I wonder can anyone shed some light here please. I have a realtive who is listed on the Commonwealth Graves Site as dying March 1916 - SS Boorara- a donkey man in the Mercantile Marine.
A cousin and I have both tried to get a death certificate with no results.
I have also tried 'googling' SS Boorara with very little information being there. I have seen references to it being torpedoed in 1918 and I am unsure as to whether there was also an Australian troopship of the same name- I am assuming that they are not the same ship.
I don't really know what to do next. I have emailed various authorities e.g. City Archives at Southampton where the National Archives site states there are records but to no avail and GRO but am not getting anywhere,
I am posting here in the hope that perhaps someone can at least shed light on the Boorara for us.
thanks in advance for any ideas

Suffolk / Baptism and Death Help Please
« on: Sunday 11 February 07 00:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,
this is a long standing query of mine which I have given up ever solving. However, I thought I will post and see if anyone can help.
I have a John Alexander born 1826-1831 Bacton Suffolk.
I established several years ago that he is the son of Osborne Alexander and Mary Percy and he is on the 1841 census, aged 15 yrs in Heywood Lancashire with Ann Kayley (Keeley etc), Ezekiel her son and Ann Vinson all from Bacton.  Presumably he arrived with the large group of Suffolk migrants c 1836 although he is not on the lists of migrants that I have seen.
These are my issues:
Osborne committed suicide in 1827. John is aged 15 yrs in 1841, a minor on marriage in 1850 and 19 yrs in 1851 census. Was Osborne his father? I like to think so and perhaps the age is a lie for whatever reason. On John's marriage certificate his father is shown as John but I do have a will of another sibling which puts him in this family.
I have visited Suffolk several times and have never found John's baptism in Bacton or Wyverstone where they also lived.
Neither can I find Mary Percy Alexander's death. I have seen another Mary Alexander which is not her and a Mary Percy in Bacton, I now wonder if that one was her. I didn't note it though. Would she revert to her maiden name after her husband's suicide?
I am really just musing here, wondering if anyone can help in some way or other.
One possibility was, I thought, that perhaps he was born around his father's death and was not baptised because of that.
Mary Percy Alexander is not in 1841 census so presumably she died- hence his journey north with 'neighbours'.
Can anyone help or give advice.
Thanks
Kath

Denbighshire Lookup Requests / 1841 search please - Bodrach
« on: Saturday 08 April 06 01:16 BST (UK)  »
In 1851 Robert Hughes born abt 1828, Llangerniew  is living with his uncle Morris Hughes born Llanrwst at Llangerniew, Bodrach.
Robert's father is also Robert.
I wonder if anyone could find Robert at home in 1841 with his father please?
He presumably has a brother Morris (living with at uncle's in 1851 too).
I have found a Robert snr with wife Catherine and son Richard in 1851 who may fit and would like to confirm.
Thanks for reading
best wishes
Heywood
