James Whitaker mmn Donohoe was registered in June quarter 1848.
Perhaps he fibbed about his age later.

Have you looked for another James b 1849 (ish) in Lancashire with a father Edmund, a Pensioner.
Have you looked James up in RIC records?

I posted the information as in your original post you have both sons born and baptised 1844.
It seems quite likely that it could be James in New Ross.
It might have been a clerical error re the name.
Do you have James’ police record? Is there anything there re his origins?

FindMyPast has R I Constabulary records, I think.

Here is a birth of a daughter, Catherine in 1866. Hugh is a Bailiff. The family are in Geashill, Kings county (Offaly).
