Ireland Resources / Griffith Valuations - accuracy of the dates given.
« on: Saturday 07 October 23 14:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi people.

According to Wikipedia, the Griffith Valuation for Leitrim was completed on 6 July 1857. It would be very easy to assume that the details contained in that part of the survey were accurate for the year stated (1857), but in fact some of the data may have been collected a few years earlier and may even have been out of date by the time the survey was published.

I ask this because I have an ancestor who was in England by 1851 (census year) but his name is listed at a property in Leitrim in 1856-57. It may be my ancestor or it may be someone else with his name.

My questions:

() Does anyone know how long it would have taken to survey a county such as Leitrim?

() Is it too much of a stretch to ponder that data assigned to 1856-57 may have come from field work predating 1851?

Am also thinking of other complicating factors. As a tenant, he might have been obliged to honour a contract of (say) five years even if he abandoned the place early in that contract period. His name thus could be linked to that property long after he left. Wishful thinking, perhaps, but is there evidence to support this?

Yup. And a short drive up OKR using Google Maps street view shows these buildings no longer exist.
But the location is quite precisely defined now.

This is a screenshot from the 1840-1860 map.
Brewers Lane, Mill Street, Wellington Place all appear in the census, very close to Pleasant Row.
It must be one of the unnamed lanes you can see running between the buildings.
Samuel Piggott is a whiting manufacturer so my money is on the lane that runs to the Whiting works.
(Not that this helps me with my ancestor but it's satisfying to have pinned down the location of the street).

Thanks all.

Quite right, Jen. Thanks. The names from the PO directory are there.

My ancestor claims to have been born here 1848/49.
I have no evidence of his parents living here, though it is hard to be sure for the years 1848/49.
Anyway, the implication is that he could have been adopted from one of these families.
Of course, there are other possibilities too.

Found Samuel Aldridge a few pages further in.
Not a neighbour of Samuel Piggott, strangely.
But see that 'Pleasant Row' has been written here.

I found Samuel Piggott in the 1851 census, listed at 10 Wellington Place.
His career is the same as on your PO directory, and Ossory St is nearby.
Looks to me that Pleasant Row was an alternate name for Wellington Place.

Interesting that his was the only name that appeared in the 1851 as well as either of your PO lists.
It suggests a high turnover of residents in this little street, but several of those seen in 1851 are still there in 1856, so it's odd they are not there in the 1851 census.

Wow, so only 9 households in 1851?

FindMyPast 1851 shows Jacob Tolley (born 1836) in Newington, Surrey.
Ditto for Family Search.
But for some reason Ancestry can't find him.
I thought census records were identical across all websites.

First, thanks for the map references.

Mckha,
for some reason Ancestry can't find Jacob Tolley in any census year,
although I can see him listed in Findmypast and FamilySearch.
That's baffling. Any idea why this should be the case?
Trouble is, I don't have subscriptions for FindMyPast or FS so I can't see the actual census forms.

It would suit my task *perfectly to start at Jacob's house and browse through the pages and see who his neighbours were, and what sort of institutions existed on this street.

---> Is there any other way I can get directly to the census forms for Pleasant Row and explore the families in the street?
