Montgomeryshire / Margaret John Thomas Owens brn Hirnant in 1800
« on: Tuesday 13 January 15 19:30 GMT (UK)  »
She was baptised as Margaret John Thomas Owens with mother Elizabeth
Would I be correct in assuming that this is fairly late Patrynomics  :) :) :) :) :) :)??
then her father was John
grandfather was Thomas
and grt grandfather was Owen?

There wasn't a separate name listed on the baptism (trans only available) for the father
When she married she went as just "owens"
Diolch:)

in Swansea right up until the mid 1880s I suppose

I wonder if anyone knows where this is ? or have they been renamed or demolished?

Glamorganshire / Margaret Ann Lewis brn.1874 Llanfabon
« on: Friday 02 January 15 11:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

Wonder if you could do a search for her parents please?

Margaret Ann Lewis was born 1874 in Nelson/Llanfabon

In jan 1900 she married James Evans of Abercwmboi(Capcoch) near Aberdare and we have thr tea set from the wedding

One census she says born Llanfabon and the other Nelson so I presume llanfabon was the parish and nelson the village she was from..

She died around 1956
Her maiden name was definately Lewis as her son was David Lewis Evans... And fanily members remember her well

I think I might have her parents but I'm not sure if they are the right ones, so I wont tell you whatve i found incase it sends someone on the wrong tracks
Cheers

The Common Room / Mothers Maiden Name on PRE 1911 Birth Registration
« on: Tuesday 23 December 14 18:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I was just looking at the birth record registration of a great grandmother
She was born in 1908...
Her parents married about 1898
My great grandmother was their only Child....
....
Her birth index record (1837-1915) ....
GIVES the mothers maiden name-- in Italics....

What does this mean?

Or am I being dull and have missed something really obvious?
Cheers

Montgomeryshire / Parish of Meifod
« on: Tuesday 23 December 14 12:18 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
At the moment it seems my mams paternal line originated from
Meifod in Montgomeryshire
The earliest known ancestors is said to have bern born circa 1793 in Meifod
This mans grandson was a speaker of both Welsh and english... But lived in the heavily anglicised parish of Guilsfield/Cegidfa and thus didnt pass on the language to his children (wife spoke both too)

Their surname was Lloyd or as I have read origniates as Llwyd aka grey

Anyways,

Does anyone have any information on the parish of Meifod?
Was this one of Montgomeryshires anglicised parishes in this period?
Or was it as Welsh as the parish of Hirnant further north west in the county

Any onformation on the parish will be greatly appreciated to help ke try and build a picture of what kind of people they were
Thanks

Pembrokeshire / Welsh Surnames in South Pembrokeshire
« on: Saturday 20 December 14 17:19 GMT (UK)  »
I have a line of ancestors that came from Haverfordwest in the South of the county which I have back to around 1800 at the moment but I'm early on in my research on this line.
They all have Welsh surnames, where as a majority I would say in the parish registers have English surnames...
So I am wondering whether the Welsh surnames denote that they were of Welsh Ancestry and had just migrated to the south of the county as it was richer.....

Any one have any guesses?

Pembrokeshire / Richard Griffith/s marriage to Elizabeth circa 1810 born St Issells
« on: Sunday 14 December 14 19:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I cant seem to find a marriage between Richard Griffith/s from St Issells born 1781 son of Thomas
to Elizabeth.... born 1784
They resided in St Issells
and my 4th grt grandfather was born to them in 1814 in St Issells
So I suppose that they were married before then(hopefully anyways hah)

I wonder if anyone could do a look for me?
its also a bit of a nuisance as the parish is so close to the border with Carmarthenshire I have found many marrying over the border etc

Let me know if you need any more information
thanks  :)

Pembrokeshire / To where did Peter Griffiths go? Born 1844 St Issells
« on: Saturday 29 November 14 11:46 GMT (UK)  »
Peter Griffiths was born in St Issells in 1844 to parents
John Griffiths and Rachel ne้ Griffith/s
he was from St Issells (1815) and she was from Eglwyscummin,Carmarthenshire(1804)

in 1851 the family is living in St Issells and Peter has a sister called Ann Griffiths and a half brother called John(whose father is unknown-poss base born of Rachel)

1861 Peters parents had moved to Swansea and just Ann was living with them

1861-Peter was boarding with a Britten family in Llanelly where he says he was an engineer

Peter married Mary Watkins born 1844 Haverfordwest, daughter of Benjamin Watkins a coachmaker and his wife Elizabeth ne้ James
at that time his address was Birchgrove Cottage, Llansamlet, glamorgan
Peters father John was said to be a colliery agent

Note that on the same day Mary Watkins' sister also married there..

1871- not known where is was

in 1871 his wife and children Annie b 1867 and John (Watkin)b 1869 both in Pembroke Dock
were living with Peters parents in Llansamlet..

1881-Not known where he was

in 1881 Mary was back living in Haverfordwest (Barn Street)
with her children
new children were,
William Benjamin born 1874 Plas Marl,Glamorganshire(swansea area)-Llangyfelach
Thomas Henry born 1876 D.O

1891- Not known where he was

in 1891 Mary was again living in Haverfordwest with two new children
Alice born 1881 Haverfordwest
George born 1884 Haverfordwest
Mary is listed as Married so Peter should be still alive

by 1901 Peter was dead
Mary was listed as being a Widow on the 1901 census

William Benjamin Griffiths married Jane Molineux in Cadoxton-Juxta-Barry, Glamorgan in 1898...
Peter was said to have been a Fitter....but no note is present to say that he was deceased at the time
but looking trough the register I don't believe that any comment to a father being dead was put down..
a newspaper article about he marriage does not give any mention of his father...but does mention "Mrs Griffiths" Haverfordwest...but plenty about the brides parents as I suppose the locals knew the family better...

These baptisms were found by a kind member on here a while back

Alice Griffiths born 30th March 1880 baptised 13th January 1887
Thomas Henry Griffiths born 17th July 1876 baptised 13th January 1887
George Griffiths born 14th February 1884 baptised 13th January 1887
All showing abode Barn Street, Father Peter occ Engineer Mother Mary
and
William Benjamin GRIFFITH 28th September 1873 Llansamlet Father Peter Mother Mary

I believe that is all the information I have at the moment...

Wonder if anyone could help find Peter on the census?
Thanks :)
