He doesn't look very happy does he? We think that he's my husband's great grandfather.

It looks as though something was split on the photo or that there was a glare. Would anybody be able to get rid of it?

I'm trying to put together and print a selection of the photographs that we have.

Thank you for any help

It has been a long time since I've been on rootschat, but I have finally decided to try to sort out a load of the photographs that we have lying around the house. Remebering the amazing things that people here can do with photos, I wondered whether somebody would have the chance to clean up the photo of my husband's grandfather. I'm not sure whether the photo was torn or just creased.

Thank you for your help

Canada Lookup Request / Watters in Canada
« on: Tuesday 18 May 10 20:07 BST (UK)  »
I recently found a report about Thomas Watters in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born in Hamilton, Ontario in 1855. His parents were Alexander Watters and Agnes McKeon, both of whom were Scottish. They apparently emigrated to Canada around 1850 but then moved to the United States around 1869/70.

I am interested in anything on Alexander in particular such as immigration records. Was there a census in Canada in the 1850s-1860s? If so, that too. I am trying to determine whether Alexander was the son of Thomas Watters of Raploch, Stirlingshire, so I really hope that this Alexander was born around 1825.  :)

Thanks for any help that you can give

US Lookup Requests / Watters in Chicago and Des Moines 1869 onwards
« on: Tuesday 18 May 10 20:02 BST (UK)  »
Please could someone look up a family for me in the US census for 1870? I found a report about Thomas Watters, son of Alexander Watters. Young Thomas was born about 1855 in Hamilton, Ontario, and his father was born in Scotland. Alexander's wife was Agnes, but I'm not sure whether she was still alive in 1870. She might have been.

I am trying to figure out whether Alexander was the son of Thomas Watters from Raploch, Stirlingshire. If so, I hope that the Alexander Watters in Chicago was born around 1825!  :)

I'll put a request on the Canada boards as well.
Thank you

Please would someone look up Mary and Robert Clark in the 1850 census for me? I believe that they were in St. Lawrence County. They were both Scottish. She was born about 1817, and I don't know about him.

Thank you

United States of America / Hardy family of Saratoga
« on: Sunday 06 January 08 22:00 GMT (UK)  »
Could anyone please help here? My mother in law asked me for a friend of hers. (We don't live too far from Saratoga NY, but I have no idea what to do with US records!)

We're trying to find information on Lilian (Lily) Alice Louise Hardy who was apparently born in Saratoga on 30 April 1875 to John Thomas Loraine Hardy and his wife Alice Louisa. No idea on the wife's maiden name. Apparently they returned to England when Lilian was about 4 years old.

The friend is trying to confirm which Saratoga Lilian was born in. Then perhaps I can help her go further back. Could anyone find the birth registration information so that I could get the birth certificate.

I don't know when (or why) the family came to the US. Perhaps John and his wife were here in 1870 and appear on the census then. Anyone have that info?

Any help gratefully received.
Thanks
Isobel

PS Just found the marriage of John and Alice in the IGI. Her maiden name was Burrows. They were married in 1872 so won't be in the US census. Just need the information on Lily's birth please

Canada Lookup Request / Family of James Bow Watters from Canada?
« on: Sunday 28 October 07 13:57 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to tie up all my Watters and Bow families in Stirlingshire. They seem to intermarry, and reuse the same names, so it's very confusing!

Anyway, while Googling, I found on the Veteran Affairs, Canada website, mention of a Private James Bow Watters, killed in France on 27th September, 1918. His date of birth was Oct 25, 1889 in Canada.

What I want to know is, who were his parents? I have an Alexander Bow Watters who, according to his father's will, emigrated to the US around the 1850s, so perhaps there's a link there.

There has to be some sort of connection. It's too much of a coincidence to have both Bow and Watters in a name.

Thanks

Renfrewshire / Anyone have Scottish Monumental Inscriptions Pre-1855 Renfrewshire Vol. 2?
« on: Wednesday 19 September 07 17:14 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone have access to

Scottish Monumental Inscriptions Pre-1855 Renfrewshire Vol. 2

and also be willing to try a lookup for me?

I'm trying to find out more information about Mary McNab, who was married to William Yeats/Yates. She died, probably in Paisley, somewhere between 1851 and 1855.

Thank you

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / Anyone have access to Parish records for Boston?
« on: Monday 09 July 07 22:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello

In the IGI is a member submitted reference to the marriage of Frances Sykes and William Smith on 4th February 1803 in Boston, Lincolnshire.

I think that this is the marriage that I want, but I want to check it. (I never completely believe the member submitted listings in the IGI :-\) I'm also curious whether the parish record gives the home parishes of Frances and William. I think it should - fingers crossed.

Thanks
Isobel
