Hello,

With help from a good Samaritan, I have a possible family ....a Hill family from Arncliffe, Yorkshire, England. Parents Thomas Hill born 27 DEC 1776 Arncliffe, Yorkshire, England and Agnes Nelson, born 06 Sep 1788 Dent, Yorkshire, England.

My question is does anyone know of any living descendants of the above Hills....so I can possibly find a DNA connection to one of them to prove once and for all, that my Richard belongs to this family.

I would be forever grateful and happy to provide any additional information to help!!

Thanks so much,
Stephanie

Europe / Valentine Krug & John George Grof - Huguenots?
« on: Thursday 01 April 21 04:38 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

My Grandfather would tell my Father that they were "Huguenots" without further explanation. Since, I have stumbled upon distant relative documents - saying that these ancestors were Huguenots, that this could be proven, and that they were naturalized in the "Publications of the Huguenot Society of London", vol 24, pages 47 and 48. I have seen these pages and their names there. https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=uc1.c2800226&view=1up&seq=11

All I know about Valentine Krug is that he was born in Lengefeld, Germany in 1689 and he settled in Pennsylvania (Lancaster County) and naturalized on 2 September 1753. John George Grof was also born in the Saxony area of Germany, and settled in PA also and was naturalized on 4 April 1752. In my document, my distant relative wrote "The Krug and Grafs were refugees into the German States from French persecution, and both signed the oath of allegiance to England when they came to Pennsylvania Colony."

So my question is....what else does one need to prove Huguenot ancestry? How do I know if their names were French and they were Germanized?

Thanks so much,
Stephanie

Ireland / Re: Thomas Dunn - born ~1730 in USA/Ireland?

Irish Genealogy Toolkit is a guide to Irish family history research. It has frequent updates.
https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com

Another free forum on which you could post an enquiry is "Ireland Reaching Out". https://irelandxo.com

It's possible that Thomas was in an organised emigration scheme to settle the area. The fact that he possessed a large parcel of land (by Irish standards) may indicate that he got a land grant. On the other hand, he may have arrived there independently and acquired land for himself or married into it.

Thank you for the suggestions! I do not know if he is Irish for sure - but assume so since Dunn is an irish surname? But I will definitely post in those other groups for potential information. Thank you!

Dang it. I put in the wrong year - that was the death year for Elizabeth - I altered the original post. Thanks for catching that. Elizabeth married Robert Jones ~1782 in York as well.

I do not know Alice's surname unfortunately, but she is in FindaGrave as Alice Dunn, she died in February of 1780. It's interesting that the information for that record was from "Quaker" records. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/186747774/alice-dunn I do not know anything about her other than that she is Thomas's wife.

I got information on Thomas based on going to the historical library in Pennsylvania. I do have more information on him I will have to go through and add here..although my attachments were too big to put here. Thanks for telling me about the Surname Interests section of this site - i'll have to add Dunn to there too!

The info I have on Thomas:
Thomas owned 225 acres of land and lived "2 miles from the borough." He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in York. About all I have about him. The land had to be sold after he died to defray debts....sold to Nathan Worley. I am not sure where he was born but I see people saying he was born in PA....so he may have been in that area his whole life.

Ireland / Thomas Dunn - born ~1730 in Ireland?
« on: Thursday 04 February 21 03:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi All,

Wonder if anyone has any information on a Thomas Dunn, born around 1730 in Ireland. I don't have his parents names but he immigrated to America and settled in Pennsylvania.

I know he passed away on 11 JUL 1793 in York, Pennsylvania and was married to Alice. He had my ancestor Elizabeth Dunn, born in York in 12 Jul 1762 and died in 1826.

I realize that this isn't much info but wanted to ask the forum in case anyone had any information.

Thanks so much!
Stephanie

Are you able to perhaps find a Will for Thomas Hill - In 1841 there is a Thomas Hill aged 60 (rounded) Cattle Dealer at Buckden, Parish of Arncliffe On 20 Dec 1846 there is a burial at Hubberholme for Thomas Hill of Buckden, aged 69.

I haven't been able to find this will. Where did you find the reference please?

Looks at though this was another daughter Ann that I didn't have written down. Perhaps his other deceased daughter (Agnes) wasn't mentioned because her kids were older? Not sure.

Btw, I found burial of Thomas Hill in 1846 on FindmyPast. Hope that helps!

I do notice that it's interesting that he names his late daughter "Ann" (when I show Agnes is her name) and her last name should be "Hill" but he names a different name. Hmmm. No luck with him naming his grandson Richard....just his late daughter and her "3 children."

So if the daughter's forename and surname are unexpected, how sure are you that this is the Richard Nelson you're looking for?

With all the data that came along in that Will, yes. I'm just a bit mystified at the daughter's name and married name. Hmm.

With wills, the operative date is the date of probate (when the will was proved), not the date of death.

Richard's will, proved 1849, is here ...

ADDED - this Richard Nelson died in 1848, not 1843.

WOW. I cannot believe you found this - I am SO appreciative - thank you so much! And yes you are correct, Richard Nelson did die in 1848, not 1843. I misspoke. Thanks for the correction. :)
