Just my two cents worth - R.S.M. - if he was in the army it's Regimental Sergent Major.  My father was one.  Again on my dad - his name was Charles Henry, but he consistently went by Bill - no idea why.  If I had not know differently I would have used that name to register his death - so perhaps whoever did that only put down what they knew his name to be?

Also if you ever find Mary's connection to the name MELDRUM I'd love for you to post it. My great grandmother's maiden name was MELDRUM from Hartlepool, County Durham.  She also lived in S.A. from abt. 1882-1889, but I believe she went by the last name of WALLER by then.

Thank you both so much - another to boot!  Didn't know about Ella!

It is appreciated, Linda.

Thanks very much.  Therefore she presumably died between 1861 and 1871.

Can anyone find Elizabeth WALLER in 1871, born 1798 in Pilton, Northants?  In 1861 she is at Benefield Road, Oundle as a lodger.

This would help me narrow down her date of death!

Many thanks, Linda.

Wonder if anyone could find the following family in the 1871 and/or 1891 census:
Thomas GOODBAN born 1823 in Ringwould with wife Elizabeth born 1821 in Elham and children Charles born 1857, Eliza born 1859 and Blanche born 1865, all born Martin, Langdon.  They are in East Langdon in 1851, 1861 and 1881.  This is my great grandma's family.

Wife Elizabeth dies in 1892.

The surname varies sometimes(!) - GOODMAN, GOODBURN.

Many thanks, Linda.

Thank you so much - I will check it out.  His brother William, my great great grandfather moved up north with the growth of the railway, so that does make sense.

Thanks Goggy - unfortunately Cheeseman is extremely common in Kent, so doesn't make things any easier.

Thank you so very much - I cannot believe how stupid I was!  Guess who the witnesses were at my great grandfather's (Elizabeth's brother) marriage in 1866?  James and Ann Fox!!
I was so hung up on her name being Elizabeth I just didn't put two and two together, even though she is shown as Ann in the 1851 census.

I will of course find the marriage between James and Elizabeth to verify it, but I would say it looks like a good possibility to be her.

Thanks again, Linda

South Africa / WALLER, 1881-1883

Looking for any connection to William Robert (known as William Henry) WALLER, wife Ellen/Nellie (nee MELDRUM), and children Kate Laura born 1883 and William Henry born 1885 in South Africa.  Kate is my grandmother. William and Ellen left England sometime betweem 1881 and 1883 when my grandmother was born - they did not marry in England. By 1889 Ellen and the children are back in England, where Ellen remarries stating herself to be a widow.   She and the children show up in the 1901 census which is how I knew them to be born in South Africa.

Ellen disappears again in 1903/4 when her children marry - did she return to South Africa? Her married name was then HUNTER.  My grandma Kate also leaves her family in 1918 - did she too return to her birth place of South Africa?

I would dearly love to know where they were born, and where my great grandfather William died.  I have tried the death notices with no luck.

I know this is a long shot, as I realise it's very difficult to find marriages and births in South Africa, without knowing where they took place.   Just fingers crossed that someone recognizes the names!

Thanks, Linda.
