Placed a small memorial vase there for George this week - at least now there is something to mark his short life.  RIP George.

WW1 In Memoriam / 13 May 1918 - Robert Alexander, Age 26, Royal Scots
« on: Saturday 04 October 14 23:23 BST (UK)  »
Private 39312 Robert Alexander
"A" Coy. 16th Bn. Royal Scots
Taken prisoner on 12 April 1918
Died of wounds in Lagensalza POW Camp 13 May 1918
Buried in Niederzwhren Cemetery, grave reference X.B.6.
Born 31 Dec 1892 at Bo’ness, West Lothian
Son of Thomas and Mary Alexander.
Also remembered on Bo'ness War Memorial and on his parents’ grave in Bo'ness Cemetery.

Robert married Joan Adamson in Glasgow on 6 Nov 1917 when he was home on leave.  Robert married Joan in secret and his family never knew of the marriage until after the war.  He returned to his unit in France a few days later and never saw her again.  He wrote to his family in April/May 1918 to tell them that he was a POW – but no mention that he had been wounded.  It is unknown if the wounds he died of were sustained at the front or in the POW camp.  He was a stretcher bearer in his unit and the youngest son in his family, in civilian life he worked for his father as a haulage contractor.

Could you post up the document - it might help if we could see it.

For me this was one of the better episodes and a move back to more interesting family research rather than the thirst for sensationalism in some recent ones.

I would certainly agree with Forarian that the panel above the door is the most likely aspect to have remained consistent in original condition - but no guarantees.

Might help to narrow down your search a bit by identifying the regiment and then searching where they had drill halls - that might narrow it down to a few locations rather than the whole city.  Medal index cards at National Archives might be a starting point - or post your grandfathers details here for some help from forum members.

The Lighter Side / Re: Animal pets attending funerals

I attended a cremation where the desceased's beloved dog was present for the funeral - it was one of her wishes.  The dog was perfectly behaved and I think it gave the immediate family some comfort (the desceased was not elderly).

It was also the best behaved I had ever seen the dog - its usual demeanour was swinging from the lightshade -:)

In Scotland Gus is a common abbreviation of Angus.
