Hi

I have obtained two Scottish ancestors, probate information and their inventory of wills, showing that one of them died in 1876 and whose estate was valued at £1,291 18s 8d and another who died in 1903 and whose estate was valued at £3,728 14s 6d

Although I can do a historic inflation calculator, to figure out the current equivalent value what I would like to know is where that sort of money put them in society financially speaking for the time (1876 + 1903).

Thanks

Hi
I was thinking of using the 7 day free trial period, but after looking at reviews, there seem to be issues about cancelling subscription etc.

Has anyone used this site and could confirm or qualm fears!

Scotland / The disappearing McLarty..
« on: Thursday 25 August 16 09:08 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I loaded up with some SP credits, hoping to take a family back a few generations, but alas have hit a brickwall and the credits are taking a big hit, for no return..

I have Malcolm and Janet McLarty (nee Duncan) living in Ayr on the 1841 census with children and both give birthplace as Ayrshire.  Malcolm gives his year of birth as 1806 and Janet 1803.

I have managed to trace them both forward from the 1841 census to their deaths, Malcolm in the USA in 1868 and Janet in 1853 in Ayr.

I have a name variation on the children's birth/baptism records (all in Ayr) as being McClartie, but even trying this has not helped find Malcolm's birth or any likely possibilities for his parents.

Thanks for any help to overcome this.  I am thinking that the birth in Ayrshire could be throwing me and maybe he came from a different region of Scotland or even from Ireland but cannot join the dots!

United States of America / Help to find people on US 1870 and 1890 census
« on: Friday 19 August 16 20:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I have a Henry J Young (b.1843 Ohio) and a Marion McLarty (b.1845 England/Scotland) getting married in Chatfield, Minnesota in 1867.

I cannot find them on the 1870 US census, they had a daughter Alice around 1867 that would also be present on it.

I have Henry's death in 1889, but cannot find Marion and Alice on the 1890 census.

On the 1875, 1880 & 1885 census's they were living in Jordan, Fillmore.

I have Marion on the 1895 census alone, living in Chatfield, not sure if Alice died or was married by then.

Marion died in Chatfield in 1923 and obit does not mention Alice, so assuming she died, but would be interested to see if she was still alive in 1890 census.

Thanks

2. Jeanette Skelly Date of death 16th January 1954 in Janesville, Wisconsin.

3. Mary Gormley resident in Milwaukee - Looking for date of death and then can try and find obituary.   Mary died between 1951 and 1976 and was born in 1872.

United States of America / Researching a nineteenth century Postmaster
« on: Monday 11 July 16 11:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have been researching a relative who was postmaster of Chatfield, Fillmore County, Minnesota, from 1861 to 1881 (apart from Johnson's term 1865-69).

I have found the Ulysses S Grant nomination as per the attached from the 'Journal of the Executive Proceedings of the Senate of the United States of America' March 1873 to March 1875 edition.

It seems that all of these volumes are searchable online, however I cannot find anymore presidential nominations for him and would really like to collect as many as I could, especially the nomination from Abraham Lincoln.

Thanks

Canada / Help with the McAdam family
« on: Thursday 02 June 16 09:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I have got quite far with tracing a branch of the family in Canada, but the trail has gone cold on a few of them, so any further help would be greatly appreciated.

So far:-
I have James McAdam (b.1871 - Scotland) and his wife Agnes McAdam (b.1871 - Scotland), left Scotland for Canada in 1906.
They had three children, Jean (b.1899), Smith (b.1901) and Margaret (b.1903)

I can find them on the 1911 census at York South Sub-Districts 37-50, Ontario, Canada.

Agnes then died in 1921 and is buried in Norway Cemetery, Toronto.
James remarried to Mary Anderson in September 1926.
Mary McAdam (nee Anderson) died in January 1927.

I cannot trace James McAdam from 1927.
I cannot trace Jean McAdam (b.1899) after 1911 census
I cannot trace Margaret McAdam (b.1903) after 1911 census

Smith McAdam looks to have immigrated to the US in 1925, but have lost him after this.

Thank you
