Suffolk / Re: Dorothy Jinkerson / Walker

Got the Swan line  back to the mid 1600's (plus the line of Florence's natural father back to the mid 1500's).  It took a bit of digging, plus some lateral thinking to throw up all the connections, but I've had the 'missing links' and some romances on both sides of the counterpane verified by others.

It's Peter Walker's ancestry that is proving difficult, and that is where being able to track down a death certificate would help -- His marriage certificate does not give many clues, Age at marriage given as 23. Father's name given as John Walker, mariner.

Lowestoft census records show that he was a fisherman, originally from the Liverpool area, but I've not been able to tie any available birth records to him.

From FreeBMD

A Peter Walker is registered born Liverpool, spring quarter 1858 -- Possibly born June 1858
Date of and place of birth estimated from marriage details (certificate obtained).

A Birth Certificate obtained for Peter Walker, b 12 May 1858 - father name given as Joseph Walker - Shoe Maker -- does not appear to be correct Peter.

1861 census at private house, West Derby - Boarder - the only Peter of correct age in Liverpool area.  It is possible that his mother had died whilst he was an infant, and as his father would be away at sea, he was 'boarded' with another family - possibly a relative.

1871 census - the only entry of correct age is located at 80 Roper St, Whitehaven - apprentice draper - pob Liverpool, however at age 13, Peter may also have been away at  sea as by then he was of working age. Another possibility was that he may have subsequently left the draper's trade, and become a fisherman - Whitehaven being an important fishing port on the West Coast

1881 Census  In port  -- Lowestoft harbour --  on board fishing vessel "Sea Flower"

Herbert SANDWELL   M   24    M             Broadstairs, Kent, England   Master
William WRIGHT           U   19    M   Carlton Colvill, Suffolk, Eng   Mate
Peter WALKER               U   21    M   Liverpool, Lancashire, England   Seaman
George LONG           U   17    M   Carlton, Suffolk, England   Apprentice
William LONG           U   14    M   Lowestoft, Suffolk, England   Apprentice

Married: 31 MAY 1882  to Florence Gertrude Swan in St. Margarets, Lowestoft, Suffolk - Occupation - Fisherman
Note: Note: Witnesses: Charles Calver and Elizabeth Rose Britteon.  Elizabeth Rose Britteon was Florence Swan's half sister

Date of Death approx 1915 taken from an entry in the IGI, However I can find no record on Free BMD, or in Military records - however as he would have been 56 at the outbreak of WW1 it's doubtful whether he would have been in the Royal Navy.

The Lowestoft fishermans memorial does not list him as having been lost at sea.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Suffolk / Dorothy Jinkerson / Walker
« on: Friday 15 June 12 11:42 BST (UK)  »

I've just unearthed details of a marriage between Dorothy Hilda Jinkerson and Richard Victor Hugh Walker, who married in Lowestoft around 1920.

Richard was my GM's youngest brother, and I've run in to a brick wall trying to find details out about Richard's father (and my GGF Peter Walker).

I'm wondering if anyone has details of descendants / relatives that I may be able to contact.

We do not have a death certificate - just an extract from the parish register.  His parents are not named - only a note that they are both deceased.

His marriage records are not of much use either, as all that is available is the extract of the Banns from the parish register and again no note is made of his place of birth or parents names.

As he died in April 1900 - age given as 72, therefore he was probably born between April 1827 and April 1828.

Sadly we have little else to go on.

Fascinating to know a book of the Britteon's history exists.  For quite a while I was convinced that my GGM Florence Gertrude Swan was actually born illegitimately to John Britteon and Mary Ann Sterry Swan before their marriage, but subsequent research revealed the Murrell ancestry.

Whilst my GGF apparently did have a middle name, Robert, that is almost certainly not my GGF.  His marriage certificate and census records give his place of origin as Liverpool area, though he did settle in Lowestoft as a young man.

His son in law was a Tyneside trawlerman ( engineer) who served in WW1 and WW2 in the Minesweeping service. During WW1 he was stationed at Lowestoft, where he met and married my grandmother Rhoda Gertrude Walker.  He was decorated in WW2 with the DSM which he received from the King at Buckingham Palace.

Thank you very much for your help, Mary.

At least it seems to rule out him being lost at sea in the Lowestoft area.

We still do have other potential information sources at the Suffolk records office, as they keep records of the various locally based fishing vessels, and the names of crews and dates served.  Not being based in the area, my co-researcher and I are unable to visit, so it is going to cost a bit in 'research fees' by the record office staff.

Once again, many thanks

Alan

Mary

There's a picture of the memorial on the St Margaret's website, http://www.stmargaretslowestoft.co.uk/ but unfortunately it's not clear enough to read any inscriptions.

Look in the North Aisle -- you can't miss it.

Mary

I'd got that information already, thank you.  What I am really after is details of the Fishermans Memorial Plaque / Stone that's in St Margarets Church, which details Lowestoft Fishemen lost at sea from the late 1800s to about 1926, when it became full, and then records were kept by the Fishemens Bethel.

I'm pretty certain my GGF died between 1896 and summer 1915, but there seems to be no record anywhere.

Regards

Alan
