Hi. I live in the North West of England and I'm trying to locate any Romany members from Westmorland/Cumberland or Scotland. My great grandmother was possibly Romany but there may be links through my Great grandfather as my mum is confused. I've linked back to a James Smith who was an ostler in 1840's in Milnthorpe and Wilsons from the same area, but the link could be through Holland, Houghtons, Harrisons, Howards, Halsalls or Hutchinson, or possibly Marshall. (I think they liked surnames beginning with H in my family!!!!)I have noticed, however, that I am getting loads of Stewarts coming through on my DNA matches and my DNA is quite high on the Scottish side. Any help would be appreciated.

Travelling People / Re: Looking for SMITH family - Gypsy's ??

I'm interested in Smith/ Holland gypsies. My great grandmother Annie Hadwin born 1875 Leigh, was presumed to be Romany. She and my great grand father Charles Halsall took in a boy called William Holland in Southport born  in 1925. Annie's mother was Jane Smith from Kendal born 1837. I have found a family that fits but no Romany links as yet.  There was mention of links to a Gypsy Queen. I wonder if Henty Smiths family moved anywhere up to Kendal. ??

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Romany Smith, Wilson in Cumbria and Morecambe

Hi Sandra

Thanks for your interest. From when I was a child my mum always told me about the Romany link on her father's side of the family. She remembers seeing a photo of her grandmother stood by a Romany caravan and that when her grandmother died, the caravan had been destroyed along with all her possessions. Also apparently if a traveller came to the door selling clothes pegs they would apologise once they saw my mum, saying that they wouldn't bother her again and that she looked just like her ancestor "Margaret Ann"!! (Mum said she was named after Margaret Ann, the Romany)
The odd thing is that on my mum's maternal side of the family her grandmother was called Margaret Ann Redmond. I have traced her back to Liverpool. Margaret Ann's father died when she was young and she appeared to be living with her grandparents the Lennon's. They were all from Ireland and had come over to Liverpool during the potato famine.
I therefore wondered if my mum was confusing the two grandmother's but she is insistent that the Romany link was through her father.
When I get chance, I'm going to Liverpool to see if I can go through the Gypsy Lore records but have just been putting feelers out beforehand to see if anyone could help me.

Family History Beginners Board / Romany Smith, Wilson in Cumbria and Morecambe

Apologies if I have posted this before. I'm trying to find out more about my mother's side of the family. My great grandmother Annie Halsall (nee Hadwin) born 1875 from Morecambe was supposed to have Romany links.
Annie's mother was Jane Smith from Kendal born 1837 and her father was David Hadwin from Morecambe.  Jane's father was James Smith an Ostler (mentioned on Jane and David's marriage cert). The only family I have found is:
James Smith living in Milnthorpe in 1841 with his wife Jane and children Jane Smith Jnr. and Hannah. James is Ostler at The Cross Keys Inn ( I have newspaper cuttings on his death in 1845 to confirm this) His parents are John Smith, farmer from Haverflatts and Dorothy Bindloss. Jane Smith senior, who is married to James, was born around 1811 as Jane Wilson. Her father is John Wilson, a clogger!!
My great great grandparents Jane Smith and David Hadwin travelled from Kendal, through Morecambe and down towards Southport/ Liverpool. Annie met my great great grandfather Charles Halsall from Southport along the way and were married in Southport 1898. Charles was apparently a clown at a circus but I have nothing to prove this and that is another story!!
If anyone knows of the family or any Smiths/ Wilsons from Kendal I would be extremely grateful as I want to either prove or disprove the story if possible.
Thank you.

Leicestershire / Re: Holland Family Tree.

Hi
I'm very new to this site. I've already posted elsewhere about this so forgive me if you've already read it!!
I'm trying to find out more about my great grandparents. Charles Halsall and Annie Hadwin, both living in Southport in the 1900's upwards born about 1875. Annie, according to my mum was Romany and Charles was a clown. I've traced Annie, whose parents were David Hadwin and Jane Smith, back to Morecambe. On their marriage cert Jane's father is James Smith an Ostler and Jane comes from Kendal. I found a Smith family in Milnthorpe in the 1841 which appear to fit. James Smith is an Ostler at The Cross Keys Inn and his parents are John Smith and Dorothy Bindloss. (The Bindloss are a wealthy family from Milnthorpe/Heversham)
The reason I'm linking this to the Hollands is that living with my great grandparents, Charles and Annie, in 1939 was a 16 year old boy called William Healy Holland, a grocer's assistant. He was taken in my great grandparents and my mum remembers him very well. He married in Southport to a Monica and moved to Crosby. Apparently he was quite musical and my mum said he met or knew The Beatles!! He died quite young in 1982 at the age of 57. I'm quite interested to find out more about him. I know his birthday was 5/4/1925 but don't know where he came from. The interesting fact is that a Walter Holland ran a grocer's shop in the next road in Southport in 1939 and I wondered if there was a link between them.

I'm trying to research my family history on my mothers side. My mum has always said that we have Romany links and there is some connection to a Queen of Gypsies. When I was younger if a Gypsy came to the door they would recognise her as she opened the door!  The only information I have is that my great grandmother, who was supposed to be Romany, was Annie Hadwin from Morecambe born July 1875. She was married to Charles Halsall, who apparently was a clown, though I can't find anything about him. They lived in Southport in 1900's onwards. In the 1930s they appeared to adopt or look after a William Healy Holland, born 1925 but I can't find where he originated from and that's another story!! Annie's parents were David Hadwin and Jane Smith (born in Kendal 1837) . They lived in Cheapside Morecambe in the 1870's. Jane Smith's parents were James Smith and Jane Wilson. James Smith was apparently an Ostler. There are obviously many Smith's but the only one that appears to link around Kendal was a James Smith in Milnthorpe who worked as an Ostler at The Cross Keys inn. There is also a Jane Wilson who's father could have been John Wilson, a clogger in Kendal. There is a link with the Smiths and the Bindloss family in Milnthorpe who were very wealthy and had numerous pack horses for their trade.
The odd thing is that my mum took a massive interest in horses when I was younger and my son desperately wanted to learn to ride when he was younger and is now having lessons in his 20s.
I would be so grateful if anyone recognises anyone from this information. Thank you

Ayrshire / Re: Curlett family, Kilbirnie ayrshire?
« on: Saturday 30 April 16 05:32 BST (UK)  »
I've only just found this link. My ancestor was Peter Ball born around 1799 Southport Lancashire. He married Alice Jackson in 1829 and one of their children was Elizabeth Ball. Elizabeth married Robert Barton as stated on this link. The exciting part of this is that Peter Ball was the Bellman or town crier for southport between about 1830 to 1858 (his death) and an historical novel was written about him called "Peter the Bellman" by Alan Joyce. The book is out of print now but can occasionally be found on the internet. I've tried researching Peter's parents but I'm having trouble getting any information at present. If anyone knows anything about him please could you reply to this message. Thanks
