Lanarkshire / Glasgow: Old Funeral Directors
« on: Wednesday 14 November 07 17:35 GMT (UK)  »
I wondered if anyone out there had looked at the contents of the House of Fraser collection held in the University of Glasgow.

This webpage: http://www.archives.gla.ac.uk/collects/catalog/hf/hf057.html

shows that there are some Funeral records of the original owners who were Wylie & Lochhead Ltd, furniture manufacturers and funeral directors, Glasgow, Scotland

*Ledgers (Funeral Office) 1888-1950;
*journals (Funeral Office), 1898-1941

Thanks,
Rena

Europe / GERMANY - Ten wives
« on: Saturday 13 October 07 16:22 BST (UK)  »
I came across this snippet which may interest a few people:-

<<Larry Jensen's Genealogical Handbook of German Research notes that "On February 14, 1650, The Parliament of Nuernberg decreed that because so many men were killed during the Thirty Years War, . . . .The decree stated that every man was allowed to marry up to ten women. The men were admonished to behave honorably, provide for their wives properly, and prevent any animosity among them." vol. 1, page 155. >>

I'm now pausing for a very long think - did the vicar actually spell the bride's name incorrectly or was it another bride?  :-\

Glamorganshire Lookup Requests / Invisible McCarthy & Thomas 1841-1861 census
« on: Sunday 24 June 07 19:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I'm looking for McCarthy; MacCarthy; M*; McKarthy; McArthy,  and any other variation of the surname I can think of :-)
It's cost me an arm and a leg trying to find these ancestors on early Welsh census.  Not even searching for the surname initial followed by an asterisk wildcard turns them up.

Here is the couple in 1871 after they moved to England:

 Eucharist St, Walker.
McCarthy Daniel, aged 30, born Cardiff, boilermaker
McCarthy Mariah, aged 30, born Merthyr Tydfil
McCarthy James, aged 3, born Newport
McCarthy Catherine, aged 8 mths, born Walker

I have searched britishorigins for Daniel McCarthy aged 19-21 on the 1861 English/Welsh census and cant find anyone with that name in either country or on board a ship with a similar trade.  There isn't an online 1851 census showing him as a 10 yr old living with his parents.

He could be one of two babies on the 1841 census but as those fathers aren't called 'James' and are living in the poorer part of town I'm hesitant to claim them.

In 1861 Daniel's wife Maria Mary Ann Thomas had moved out of the family home and I'm not sure which of several same named girls she is but as I believe I've pinpointed her parents I'm not too bothered about finding her.

If anyone can solve the puzzle I'd be eternally grateful.

Lanarkshire / Glasgow Settlement Certificates
« on: Saturday 16 June 07 10:31 BST (UK)  »
I believe there are some surviving Glasgow Settlement Certificates.   Does anyone know what sort of date range they cover?

I have written to the Cathedral archivist but haven't had a response.

Having got my family back to mid 1700's I have pencilled in possible earlier generations back to late 1600's and would like to verify my findings.

Glamorganshire / Which Pub in Merthyr 1841?
« on: Sunday 10 June 07 14:54 BST (UK)  »
I'm presuming this 1841 hamlet is now part of Merthyr. Has anyone any idea of which tavern John Thomas worked in?  In 1851 census his wife was widowed and she and the children were living elsewhere on parish relief

The Common Room / Glasgow; Witness Names please
« on: Wednesday 07 March 07 12:18 GMT (UK)  »
Can anyone decipher the surnames of these two witnesses to a 1780 baptism?  I have an idea of the first witness but absolutely none for the second surname.

I noticed on the whole page that the vicar didn't believe in dotting his i's and had a very light stroke when crossing his t's as in "Wit" (witness)
