Norfolk / Re: Norfolk Churches on Freereg

TR is a transcript - so something not taken directly from the register.
AT is the archdeacon transcript - sent in every year by each parish to the diocese
BT is the bishops transcript - compiled by year

PR is taken directly from the parish register.

If nothing after the church name then assume it is a PR

Time machines would be good :)

The odd thing about this family is they seem to have kept it strictly within the family - none of the three ever appear on the census with any other partner.  They are either with their children, a sister, or a servant somewhere.

I am fairly certain marriage to inlaws was prohibited at that stage.   Certainly when the original wife was still alive, and presumably no divorce for ordinary people at that stage.   There was a Marriage Act of 1835 which prohibited it legally, and the deceased wife's sister's marriage act of 1907.

I have another branch of the family where both partners remarried but I am fairly certain there was no legal divorce so I guess technically they were bigamists.

Hi Whipby, it appears that Robert married Sarah Bravery, and had 2 or 3 children with her.  Then they split up, and Robert is with Sarah's sister Ellen Bravery, they also have some children.  Then they also split up.  Both surnames are used at different times.

Robert dies age 77 having been a widower for at least 20 years !
Sarah dies age 94, 20 years later, she alternates between being married and being a widow.
Ellen dies age 97, claiming the name Clover and widow for the previous 4 census's.

The Martha mentioned in the will in the previous posts is the daughter of Robert and Ellen.  Sarah and Ellen Bravery also had a sister called Martha who lived to 69 (a long lived family the Bravery sisters :)).

I would love to know how they actually arranged all this and how the sisters felt about it.

« on: Tuesday 19 June 12 14:46 BST (UK)  »
Hi Folks,

is there anyone who can tell me who was living at 34 Neal St, St Giles, London in the 1901 census please ?

I have the info for 1911 and 1891 but need to check out 1901.  I can find other houses on that street but not number 34.

thanks.

thanks.

Could well be a registry office for the other one - second marriage for both.
