Durham / Durham City Boys' Senior School 1930's
« on: Tuesday 18 October 05 15:17 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone

I wonder if anyone knows where the above school was located?
Do any pictures of it exist?  Indeed does IT still exist - at least as a building if not a school.

My Dad attended there in the 1930's. I have school reports for 1934,35,36 and also a yearbook for 1933/34.  The book gives lots of information about the curriculum and names the staff and even states what the previous years' leavers went on to do but unfortunately there is no clue as to location.

Incidentally if anyone thinks they may have a connection with the school at this period I'll be happy to look through the yearbook for relevant names.

The Lighter Side / why is nobody EVER searching for the same people as me?
« on: Friday 14 October 05 18:54 BST (UK)  »
Is it ME? ???

I read stories all the time about people who've found long lost relatives or even remote cousins 32 times removed and have, as a result, gained loads of new info and lines to research.

Why then is nobody else in the whole of genealogy land researching MY family?
AND (I know you should never start a sentence with 'and' my former English teacher would have a fit) why does no-one in my family have any of those wonderful old photos of Great Grandma Ethel (not that I ever had a Great Grandma Ethel - at least I don't THINK so) that other people always seem to have. AND (there I go again) do they ALL have to be coal miners and carpet weavers - can't I find just one sea captain, or milliner, or even a highwayman!

Sorry I'm rambling now  ::)  I think I must have just hit too many brick walls of late.  It must do something to the brain don't you think!
 ;D

The Common Room / Bastardy Bonds?
« on: Sunday 09 October 05 12:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I saw a recent posting about Bastardy Bonds and wondered if anyone here can enlighten me as to what they are, or were.
I have a particularly stickky wall in one branch of my family due largely to an illegitimate birth.  Would bastardy bonds give me a new line of enquiry?

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Private Militia Man
« on: Tuesday 04 October 05 11:11 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

On the 1881 cencus in Hunslet, Leeds one of my husband's ancestors gives his occupation as 'coal mine labourer and private militia man'.

Is there somewhere I can find out more?  Since he appeares to have employment in the coal mine it would suggest that this was some kind of part time thing.  Was this a kind of Territorial Army of it's day?

Forgive my ignorance - military history in all its forms is a complete mystery to me.   :-[

Northumberland / Raylees/Monkridge baps. 1866 lookup please
« on: Monday 26 September 05 19:51 BST (UK)  »
Hi
Does anyone have access to parish records for Raylees Monkridge for 1866?

If so could you please look up a baptism of Thomas (John?)HARRISON  born 25th February 1866 - the son of Ann Harrison.

I have the birth certificate but sometimes there is just a little more information in the parish record, maybe some hint as to where they were actually living or Ann's occupation - something that might help me track Ann down.

I know I'm clutching at straws but it's worth a shot :-\

Thanks for looking

Susan

Durham Completed Look up Requests / 1851 cencus lookup please
« on: Sunday 18 September 05 19:52 BST (UK)  »
The mystery surrounds my 2x Gt Grandmother.  On her marriage certificate (to John Curry 2.1.1861 Monkwearmouth Parish Church) her name is given as Ann McFLAHERTY - father Thomas McFlaherty.

On my Gt Grandmother's birth certificate the mother's maiden name is given as Ann FLARTY.
Her age on the marriage certificate is given as 22yrs putting her birth around 1839.

I have her (married to John) on the 1861,'71,'81'91 and 1901 cencus  and her place of birth is given differently on each:  Shincliffe, Low Fell, Durham.  Her ages on the cencus' would have her birth between 1837 and 1839.
I can't find her birth anywhere!  I have tried all kinds of variations of both names but with no luck.

Can anyone out there help?  Maybe someone could find her on the 1851 cencus? I would be eternally grateful.

Essex / London Custom House??
« on: Thursday 15 September 05 11:20 BST (UK)  »
Ellen Rymer Handley was born 18 May 1898, place of birth is given as London Custom House, West Ham.
Can anyone tell me anything about this please?  Is it an area or an actual house?
Word of mouth in the family said she was born in Canning Town, is this in the same vicinity?
Be glad to get any info.  It all adds leaves to the tree......
Thanks
Susan

Derry (Londonderry) / MARSHALL Macosquin
« on: Wednesday 14 September 05 20:50 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone
My 2x Gt Grandfather Thomas Marshall was born in about 1844 in Macosquin.  He later married Margaret Rowland (from Whitby, Yorks - he was a seaman) and settled in West Hartlepool, then Stockton and eventually died in Consett, Co Durham (England) in 1927.
His father was John Marshall and so far this is all I know about them.
I would be eternally grateful if anyone has access to records for Macosquin and could possibly give me any info about his mother.  Equally I would love to hear from anyone who simply may have a connection.
Thanks

Durham / PA in Burial Entry
« on: Sunday 11 September 05 19:01 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Can anyone tell me what PA would stand for when noted beside a Burial entry in the Parish Records?  I had thought Pit Accident but having checked records he doesn't seem to have died down the mine.
I'd be glad of any suggestions

Susan
