Lancashire / Re: William Briggs WW2 embroidery
« on: Tuesday 01 September 15 16:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi Everyone

I'm so pleased I picked up on this thread. My father broke his leg during WW2 and was therefore hospitalised. I have a picture which he embroidered during that time. It is of The Castle Carlisle and it is totally embroidered in brown. I had it framed a couple of years back and it hangs on my bedroom wall, I love it. It's great to know exactly how this embroidery came about. Sheila

Hi

I think it could say six rather than see but don't know what that would mean. The initials I think are PB possibly something to do with pension? and I think the date is 31/1/50.
Lets see what others make of that.
The PB seems to be repeated on other entries.

Nottinghamshire / Re: Notts Volunteer Police; George Brown circa 1925

Hello
This link gives a good history of what are known as Special Constables. http://www.policespecials.com/history.html
Maybe if you use that term rather than volunteers there may be some records available.

Sheila
I certainly remember special constables in Nottingham during my childhood. They had a Blue band around their hats to signify they were specials.

Technical Help / Re: Is it BT or Google? My computer's driving me mad
« on: Tuesday 20 January 15 12:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Everyone
My sister who has windows 8 had a very similar problem which she thought was down to BT. When she phoned them they said it was nothing to do with them but it was Google. In fact it turned out to be something(I'm not techie enough to know what) that had not downloaded correctly and we used the problem shooter under the control panel/ find and fix problems and this sorted the problem out. Would recommend you try this.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Ancestry shoebox
« on: Thursday 08 January 15 13:46 GMT (UK)  »
Hi Brie

I can access my shoebox from the bottom of my home page on Ancestry Uk. What you may find though, is that if you have had things in there for some time, they may have been removed. I think I had some in mine that were removed the last time Ancestry had a big update. You can only access  your shoebox when you are a paying member.

Hi

It looks to me as though he is living with a wife and daughter from the previous reply.

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: Ancestry or FindMyPast
« on: Wednesday 07 January 15 13:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hi
My suggestion is that you purchase family tree maker which gives you free access for a limited time. You then sync your tree to family tree maker, which means that all of your media saved on Ancestry is downloaded to your tree on family tree maker. Be warned this can take a long time. You then will have access to all of your media even when you are no longer a paying member. The thing to be aware of though is that it only downloads the first page of anything, so things like military records that cover several pages should be copied separately.
This is what I have done, they did extend my free access when family tree maker was updated, which was a bonus.
Hope this helps.

I have also found the parents of Emma RG12; Piece: 2683; Folio: 118; Page: 10. It seems that they are saying that the first child of Emma and Thomas Lawson is living with them although he also appears on the census with his parents.
