This is a Cabinet card of my great grandmother and her daughter. Dates won't help as Sarah Jane 1840 to 1918 and Kate 1870 to 1954. The studio was Elley (looks like) of 110, Southgate Road London, North. I can't find any Victorian/Edwardian photographers of that name on Google. No 110 is still there, a rather nice EOT house.

We were Forest of Dean then. Only reason I can think for London photography is William, son and brother was a London City Missionary from late 1880's.

Back is plain but carries negative number 435.

Technical Help / File Extension XLR
« on: Thursday 03 March 16 11:50 GMT (UK)  »
I had occasion to take my tower to local computer outlet and repair centre. I thought I had a virus but it was just corrupted files.

They wiped it and restored programs. However, instead of MS Office they gave me OpenOffice 4.1.1. It does not list Vista which I have. Most of it works but I cannot access Document Files (Pictures works). The file extensions are XLR instead of XLS as with MS office. I can't open them, best I can get is the coding.

These files contain my financial records and family history trees.

I took the pooter back and just got blank looks!!!

I would be most grateful if someone could advise me how to open the XLR files or convert to XLS files.

My grandmother was a Saunders from Uffington Berkshire (now Oxon). I have some documentation and photographs. I was told 2 Anzacs would go on leave from Western Front to Uffington. Another female Saunders married (Sir) John Garling Hurley.

I'm not getting any younger, I would like to pass on information at least before it and myself get thrown in a skip ::).

James Evans and Elizabeth Neast)East?). He 1817 to 1907, her c1814 to 1890.

James was in Glos. Constabulary 1Dec1839 until 1852 or later, his personal record does not state date of dismissal for being drunk on duty.

1841 is alright, James was in Police house at Stroud, Glos. with the other officers. Tom Bint sent me a copy of the Census Return. His wife was in Newnham.

1851 James still in Police but don't know where ? James and Elizabeth had two children, Sarah (1838) and Sarah Jane (1840)(latter my paternal greatgrandmother). Don't know where Elizabeth was or her daughter Sarah (Newnham?). Sarah Jane (10) was with her grandparents Thomas and Margaret Evans Westbury on Severn, Elton Tything.

1861 Nothing known.

1871 From Slaters Directory Newnham James Evans carpenter/joiner at Littledean. Not seen Census Return though.

1881, 1891 and 1901 Nothing known. Probably all Littledean. James died in Westbury on Severn Workhouse 1907, probably in 'hospital wing'. There were plenty of relations to look after him otherwise.

Technical Help / Backing Up to CD
« on: Thursday 18 December 14 18:38 GMT (UK)  »
I'm at a point where I normally back up files to CD. It's been happily doing it for several years. Now,  after pressing 'burn',I load an empty CD as instructed, it makes some chuntering noises, but nothing happens.

Looking at DVD RW Drive (F:) Properties it says Type CD Drive

Used Space no bytes
Free Space no bytes
Capacity no bytes

I expect the system has been upset by one of the innumerable MS downloads.

Would be very grateful for any advice. Apart from the back up discs of day to day stuff, I need to write out all my family history researches, with images, going back to early 1980's and get them on CD

This item may be the breakthrough I have been looking for for too long.

I posted request for information under Monmouthshire Lookup Requests 2005 or earlier. It appeared that my family lived in Mitcheltroy Mon. for most of 18th Century. Perhaps less now.

The entry in IGI has John Griffith b. c1715 Bedwardine St John, Worcs. marry Hannah Coley b. c1719 Stone, Staffs. at Worcester Cathedral by licence 21 January 1740.

I strongly suspect these people are my antecedents, moved to Mitcheltroy, Mon and their children were Michael bn. 1741, Thomas bn. 1743 (from whom I am descended) and Tacy bn. 1747.

Of course, next step is who were the parents of John Griffith(s). Normally and now the name Griffiths is used in proper anglicised form.

I would be most grateful if anyone has Worcester knowledge. My researches were almost entirely Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire.
