Super photo, shirt sleeve order, Highlanders, can't go any further. headdress should be a clue.

Just might be Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders in France 1940.

Armed Forces / Re: Battle Standards / Colours

I think Isandlwana 1879 was the last time colours were taken into battle. Drummer boys were not present afterwards because the Zulus mutilated the dead bodies.

My mother died in 1995. There was a funeral service in the Garrison Church, Windsor. The walls were/are covered in the guidons and colours of the Guards regiments. It was quite an experience.

Wales / Re: Descended from a Prince of Wales?

My family name is Griffiths, usually spelt in the correctly anglicised version of Gruffyd. I only go back to John born Llandogo, Mon. 1702, died 1749 Mitchel Troy, Mon. but buried Llandogo. His father also died Mitchel Troy 1749 and buried Llandogo. There was a Philip Griffiths born 1660 died 1747 Mitchel Troy, but buried Llantilio Crosseny. That courtesy of a Rootschatter. Evidently, he was a relative, but precise relationship unknown.

Going any further back highly unlikely.

Young's is a bit of an acquired taste but very good when you get used to it.

Berkshire Completed Look ups / Re: 70 ALMA RD. CLEWER
« on: Tuesday 19 November 19 13:48 GMT (UK)  »
I was born there in 1943. My mother had trained at King Edward VII in the latter 30's. 70, Alma road, Clewer within UD (according to my birth certificate). Thanks to Little Nell for drawing my attention to this Thread. I haven't driven past it since the '90's.

Alma being named after the first battle of the Crimean War. There are a lot of Alma Roads in UK.

My rellie John Griffiths 1785 to 1848, 90th Regiment was on occupation duties until discharged 1818. So, a birth in 1817 in France was quite feasible.

I have an Irene C Hogg born 1925 in my Tree. Married into my family 1943. They had 3 daughters and 1 son, all presumed living. Right neck of the woods. Actually there was another daughter, but given up for adoption, mother couldn't cope with 5 children.

Berkshire Lookup Requests / Re: Mabel Schofield, Matron, King Edward VII Hospital, Windsor

There is a photograph (in the Slough Observer) of HM Queen Elizabeth II outside the Nurses Home 2nd April, 1959.

My mother did go back to the hospital for a while. Why she'd got this photo? In those days nurses wore coloured belts. My mother had one of her own, although trained, pre SRN.
