Berkshire / Saunders of Windsor
« on: Monday 25 January 10 12:33 GMT (UK)  »
Robert Saunders married Harriett Mary Sheen Stevens before the 1841 census. They were both born in Thame around 1820.

In the 1841 census he was a saddler and they were living in Watlington but by 1851 they had moved to Henley.  By 1861 they had moved to Windsor where they were living at 25 Russell Street in 1871 with Elizabeth (24), Sidney (17), Annie (12) and Ellen (Nellie) (2) who was Elizabeth's daughter.

They had two other children George born in 1832 in Thame who possibly died  when very young and Mary Anne (Marianne) born 1850 Henley who are missing in 1871.

I know that Elizabeth married Henry Johnson at St Saviours (which is odd as he came from Upton cum Chalvey where they later lived) in 1879 and have full details of their family.  My problem is what happened to the rest of them after 1871.

Richard Buswell born c 1791 was prosecuted and acquited for receiving stolen property on 6 Jan 1842 in Northamptonshire.

I am trying to determine if this was my ancestor who was a blacksmith of the right age living in Desborough at the time, and some more details of the prosecution.

Does anyone have access to further information which might help?

Other Countries / Manico - Bucks to India 1920s?
« on: Monday 21 December 09 15:09 GMT (UK)  »
Florence Emma Wilson was born in 1886 in New Bradwell and was working in Wolverton in 1901.  She was my grandfather's sister and I have a lot of details of her parents and siblings.

She married Leslie Manico and they had a daughter who was born and died at a young age in India.  He was probably working for the railways there.

They were back in the UK by about 1940.

My problem is finding their marriage and any details of Leslie and their daughter.

Canada Lookup Request / Henry Culverhouse - Quebec
« on: Thursday 19 November 09 22:06 GMT (UK)  »
Henry Culverhouse was born in 1818 in Hertfordshire England.  He married  Catherine, surname unknown, who was born in 1820 in Quebec.  They had two children

Elizabeth Culverhouse born c 1847 Quebec Canada
Edward Culverhouse born c 1851 Quebec Canada

In 1858 he married Tryphena Roberts who was born 1830 in Watford England in Watford.  They had a number of children in England the first of whom was:

Tryphosa Matilda Culverhouse born at the end of 1858.

My problem is when and how did he get to Canada?  I don't think any of his siblings or his parents went with him.  Who did he marry and when and where?  When and where did she die?  How and when did he return to the UK with his two children?

Any help would be appreciated.

US Completed Requests / COMPLETE Saunders - A slightly unusual request
« on: Sunday 24 May 09 17:10 BST (UK)  »
The following is a summary of the details of a person in my tree.  It is derived from a number of secondary sources which I think have been using each others information.

James Saunders born 9 Mar 1848 Bicester Oxfordshire England.  He emigrated to Cook Chicago Illinois in 1865.  He married (1) Anna Dillon (born 1840 Dublin Ireland) 1868 and they moved to Glen Ellyn Du Page Illinois in 1875.  Anna died 1889 and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery Glen Ellyn. (2) Edith May Goodridge 24 Jan 1893 at Cook.  She died in Dec 1895.  (3)  Grace M Gotlieb (She was born Jun 1858 Illinois.  Both her parents were born in Germany) 1898. She died after 1900.  (4) Marion B  Vanantwerp  (born 23 Jan 1858 New York died 12 Sep 1944 Los Angeles) 28 Oct 1905 Glen Ellyn

He graduated from Bennet Medical College Cook in 1881 and on 6 May 1882 was a registered medical practitioner at Prospect Park Du Page.  He died 19 May 1921 Children:

Grace Maud Saunders born 1 Jan 1873 died 13 Aug 1910 married George Edwin Spears (born 12 Aug 1869 Uxbridge Ontario the son of Alexander Spears and Augusta Mavia Beebe, died 4 Feb 1919 Gary Indiana) 18 Jan 1899  She died 13 Aug 1910 Glen Ellyn

George Saunders born c 1876 Illinois married Nellie May Addie born c 1889 Canada.  George died 1 Dec 1935 Glen Ellyn

James Saunders born 1884 and was buried 7 Feb 1885 Forest Hill Cemetery Glen Ellyn

My feeling is that it is a merger of the details of at least two people and the dates have been manipulated to fit it together.  There are a number of discrepancies.  For example surely Grace Maud Saunders would be the daughter of Grace M Gotlieb.  What little census information that I can find seems to contradict the facts but produce even more inconsistencies.  The only bit I am sure of is in bold.

Has anyone any ideas which can constructively confirm or destroy the above?

US Lookup Requests / Saunders family
« on: Friday 22 May 09 13:28 BST (UK)  »
Richard West Saunders who was born in 1819 in Thame Oxfordshire was atailor and married Hannah Smith.  They were living in Bedford in 1861 and had the following children:

Mary E Saunders born 1841 Brill

Alfred (Woolhouse) Saunders born Q4 1844 Brill   In 1861 he is age 18 a cabinet maker boarding at 14 Derby Street Bedford

Harry Saunders born Q3 1844 Arncott Bicester
Francis Woolhouse Saunders born Q3 1846 Burston Bicester
James Saunders born 9 Mar 1848 Bicester who emigrated to the Chicago area in 1865.
Thomas Woolhouse Saunders born Q1 1857 Bedford.  Emigrated to New York arriving 27 Jun 1870 with final destination Connecticut
Kitty Woolhouse Saunders born 16 Mar 1861 Bedford.  Emigrated from Le Havre 15 Jun 1870 to New York arriving 27 Jun 1870 with final destination Connecticut.

My problem is that I can't find any of the family in the UK in 1871 and the above details of the two youngest children are very second hand and I have been unable to confirm them.  The question is thus how many of the family emigrated and how did children so young go to the USA.  Were they orphans?  In which case I need to find their parents deaths.

Occupation Interests / Veterinarian Surgeon
« on: Sunday 17 May 09 22:37 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate your views on the following:

Anthony Vickers was born in Darley Derbyshire in 1782 the son of George Vickers (probably a lead miner) and Mary Jepson.  He married Ellen Cowley and they had a number of children all of whom had fairly lowly jobs although his son Anthony was a haircutter and tailor.

In the 1841 census Anthony senior was an agricultural labourer.  However in 1851 he was a veterinarian surgeon (age 69).

London & Middlesex Lookup Requests / Can anyone find Daisy Edlin
« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 11:19 GMT (UK)  »
Henry Daniel Edlin (born 1863) was married in Q3 1889 in Uxbridge District probably to Daisy Rose Bugle.  They are the only pair on that page of the register.

In each later census Henry is not living with a wife and by 1911 is shown as a widower.

I can't find a death for Daisy or for any other Edlin female of an appropriate age anywhere.  Can someone help me dispatch her please.
