Does anybody have any idea on the unit?

Not even sure which war. Could be WW1, but then again.

Thanks for any help.

Just to note that the Cricklade Museum have not been very helpful. They asked me to send them the document I downloaded from Ancestry, which I duly did. But nearly a month later and I have not received even an acknowledgement, let alone a reply.

I ,just say that I am rather disappointed in their lack of response.

The Connelly family seem to travel from one fair to another, often staying in lodging houses.

They also seem to have associates who stayed in caravans, e.g. the Berritts

Hannah had been living with Anna since her father’s death. But had recently got out of control, hanging out with the “wrong types”, abusing both her mother and Anna, in trouble with teachers, etc. Basically her family were saying she was out of control. So she ended up in court and was sent to industrial school. Perhaps she didn’t like her step-father.

I have no idea what happened to Hannah after the court case.

As the newspaper report states both Anna Mary Walters and Hannah Connelly were living at 6 Park Cottages in 1872. So that was where they probably were in 1871.

One further thought, the Walters and Connelly families are, it would seem reasonable to assume, Irish travellers. Many of the facts that we do know, seem to coincide with their presence at fairs and associated gatherings. See, for instance, Samuel's wife, Susannah BERRITT/BURRETT, who in 1861 was living in a caravan at Hampton Wick (RG9 458 135 14) and in 1871 in a caravan in Islington (RG10 305 32 60). Thomas was born as Strood in Kent, where there was an annual fair in August.

It would be really useful to know more about the calendar for Irish travellers in Britain, the cycle of fairs etc. But whilst I can find genealogy books on Romany travellers, I can't see one on Irish travellers, who of course are a distinct group. Can anyone recommend any suitable reading?

There are a number of unanswered questions relation to the Walters/Connelly family with regard to the census:
(1) Where were James and Mary Ann Connelly in 1841 and 1851?
(2) Where was Thomas Connelly (1849-1889) in 1851? Found in 1861, 1871 and 1881.
(3) Where was Catherine Connelly (1849-1872) in 1851? Found in 1861 & 1871.
(4) Where was James Connelly (1852-?) in 1871, 1881, etc.? Found in 1861.
(5) Where was Samuel Connelly (1854-?) in 1891, 1901, etc? Found in 1861, 1871 & 1881. His wife Susannah BERRITT/BURRETT found in 1911 and 1939.
(6) Where was Hannah Connelly (1859-?) in 1871, 1881, etc.? Probably with Anna Mary Walters in 1871. See newspaper report (Hampstead & Highgate Express, 02 Nov 1872)
(7) Where was Jane Frances Johnson, née Connelly, (1864-1948) in 1891 and 1921? Found in 1871, 1881, 1901 & 1911.
(8] Where was Anna Mary Walters (1843-1917) in 1851 and 1871?

I could supply references for those declared found above, but I don't want to make this post even longer.

There are, of course, even more questions relating to baptisms, marriages and burials!
