United States of America / Help with cause of death please
« on: Sunday 10 February 13 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have been researching a member of the United Kingdom's Women's Royal Naval Service - Wren Marie Enright who died in the United States. The only details that I have are 'Road Accident'. She was married to James T. Enright of Sea Girt, New Jersey.

She was attached to H.M.S. Asbury a Royal Navy receiving station for R.N. personnel awaiting ships. The station was accommodated in the Berkley Cateret and Monteray Hotels in Asbury Park, Rhode Island, New Jersey.

Is there the remote possibility that someone may know the details of the accident on 31st May 1943?

Grateful for any information.

Dumfriesshire / Voluntary Aid Detachment - Identification
« on: Saturday 26 January 13 10:39 GMT (UK)  »
This photograph of a Voluntary Aid Detachment was taken at least 100 years ago and my research suggests that it was taken circa 1911-1913.

This is not an ‘off the cuff’ group photo, this is a professionally arranged group of nurses all in pristine new uniforms and I consider that it has important relevance to the history of the Scottish Red Cross who were unable to offer any assistance or identify the location.

The background to my research is that in 1909 the Government launched a scheme for the organisation of Voluntary Aid in England and Wales for the British Red Cross Society to assist the Government by providing Voluntary Aid to the Territorial Medical Service to meet the needs of war. This scheme was adopted by Scotland in December 1909.

The only positive identification so far is the young officer on the Matron’s left. He was Captain James Johnstone Dykes, King’s Own Scottish Borderers who was killed in action in Gallipoli on 12th July 1915. Why he was an Infantry officer was probably his personal choice as he was a qualified Doctor and Dentist which is relevant to my query.

Regarding the Elder officer on the other side, I enlarged his image to identify his decorations and he is wearing a Neck Badge that is almost certainly a Knight Commander of the Bath. I also checked the medal ribbons on his left breast and the first one that appears black has a small image in the centre which, if this was a colour photo, would obviously appear Maroon with a small Bronze Cross in the centre indicating a Victoria Cross. I am therefore 100% sure that this is Field Marshal, Lord Roberts.

I may well be wrong but I have chosen Lanarkshire as the location for the following reasons.  BRCS Archives have advised me that in the Lanarkshire Branch between 1911 and 1916 a Mrs W.A. Dykes was Vice-President at Hamilton Detachment and Mrs Lee Dykes was Vice-President of East Kilbride Detachment. Also Captain Dykes’ hometown was Westfield, Dumfries. Whether there was a family connection in unknown but they were certainly within comfortable travelling distance.

So were these two ladies responsible for the formation of a Voluntary Aid Detachment in Lanarkshire and was Captain Dykes, a qualified Doctor, responsible for the medical supervision of the training of the VAD Volunteers? More importantly, was this the first Voluntary Aid Detachment formed in Scotland and the reason for the presence of Lord Roberts whose mother incidentally was born in Edinburgh?

I am sure that there must be at least one more copy of this photo in Scotland from which a family descendent can identify any of the nurses? This would almost certainly confirm the location and the purpose of the photo.

I would be most grateful for any suggestions that may solve this problem particularly as the WWI Centenary Commemoration is on the horizon.

Canada / Sister Saint Antoine de Padoue, Canadian Nun
« on: Tuesday 27 November 12 17:38 GMT (UK)  »
Would any member have any details regarding a Nursing Nun, Sister Saint Antoine de Padoue (Birth name unknown)?

She left Quebec, Canada in 1893 to work in the Sanatorium at Durban. When the second Boer War started in 1899 she became Head Nurse of the Convent at Escourt, Natal, South Africa under the auspices of the Canadain Red Cross to look after wounded soldiers. She is recorded to have succumbed to fatigue, refusing to rest from nursing, and died in March 1900 aged 31.

Thee hundred people are said to have attended her funeral escorted by the Dublin Fusiliers.

Grateful for any further background details of her home life, nursing career, grave location, etc.

Hertfordshire / Knight's of Hatfield, Hertfordshire
« on: Monday 19 November 12 11:33 GMT (UK)  »
I have two families living in Hatfield, Hertfordshire in 1944 and I have a sneaking suspicion that there is a connection between them. The details that I currently have are –

(1)   Robert William and Emma Knight (nee Crisp) of 45 George’s Wood Road, Married in 1920, I believe in Rochford, Essex. They had a daughter, Margaret Amelia who died on 1st November 1944 age 23 whilst serving in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. (I am awaiting a Death Certificate)
(2)   Ronald Ernest George and Ruth Knight (nee Cook) of 2 Selwyn Crescent. Ruth, age 41 and her eight year old daughter, Irene Maud were killed on 22nd September 1944 by a V1 (Doodlebug). Husband Ronald was serving as a leading Aircraftman in the RAF.

I may be completely wrong but something in the back of my mind is suggesting a family connection. Can any member please help me get some sleep?

Aberdeenshire / Isabella and John Stewart, Aberdeen
« on: Friday 21 September 12 21:35 BST (UK)  »
I am researching an unfortunate lady - Volunteer Isabella Stewart, Auxiliary Territorial Service of Aberdeen who died on 11th September 1940 and is commemorated on The Commonwealth War Graves Commission, Brookwood Memorial, Surrey.

I have a Death Certificate for an Isabella Stewart, wife of John Stewart of 194 School Drive, Aberdeen who died on 11th September 1940 from coal gas poisoning at that address.

The date may well be a unique coincidence but can anybody advise if the Isabella Stewart of 194 School Drive, Aberdeen was a member of the ATS in the early days of World War Two.

Most grateful for any assistance.

Essex Lookup Requests / Elizabeth Ann Everitt (nee Moralee)
« on: Tuesday 12 June 12 12:09 BST (UK)  »
Elizabeth was the widow of Reginald Everitt a farmer of Puddle Wharf Farm, Ashdon Essex. Elizabeth died on 27th May 1944, age 38, whilst attempting to rescue the crew of an American Bomber aircraft that had crash landed on her farm. She had recsued one member of the crew, who survived the war, and whilst attempting further rescues the bombs on the aircraft exploded killing Elizabeth and the rest of the crew.

As a result of her efforts The London Gazette of 21st July 1944 records "The King has been pleased to approve the posthumous award of the Albert Medal to Mrs Elizabeth Ann Everitt....". This award is now the equivalent of the George Cross.

Elizabeth is described as being a nurse but I can find no details of her early life that would include details of where she trained or when she qualified. I would therefore be most grateful for any information regarding her early life.

Sutherland / Williamina Matheson of Dalchalm, Brora, Sutherland
« on: Tuesday 15 May 12 14:58 BST (UK)  »
I am researching specific details of the above lady whose parents were Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Matheson of the same address.

Williamina served as a Worker in the Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps and died on 5th February 1920 aged 20 years.. She is buried in Clyne New Burial Ground, also known as Brora Cemetery, Clyne in Grave number E.630. I would be most grateful for a photograph of her grave if possible. Would PM my email add. if required.

Williamina also had two brothers – Alexander, Royal Engineers and Thomas, Cameron Highlanders who were both killed in the war of whom I have sufficient details for her profile.

She also had a brother-in-law who also died in the war but I am unable to identify his surname to obtain details of his service, etc. would be grateful if anybody can assist with this name.

Williamina and her two brothers are commemorated on the Clyne War Memorial, Brora that was unveiled by her mother on 25th December 1922. There is the possibility that her brother-in-law is also commemorated on the same memorial ‘If only I knew his name’.

Will be most grateful if anybody can assist.

Perthshire / Marojie Stewart Butler
« on: Monday 26 March 12 11:25 BST (UK)  »
Would anybody have any knowledge or information regarding Marjorie Stewart Butler of Whinnyloan, Graigend, Perthshire Wife of Colonel Richard Barry Butler, C.I.E. C.B.E. M.C. and daughter of Albert Evans Pullar of Durn, Perthshire.

She has been confirmed by F.A.N.Y (PRVC), Records Officer as an Ensign of FANY, joined 9th August 1940 and held two BRCS First Aid Certificates; BRCS Home Nursing Certificate and BRCS Anti-Gas Certificate. British Red Cross Archives however are unable to confirm or offer any advice as to her membership of BRCS due to the fact the majority of the Joint War Organisation records were destroyed as a matter of policy after the war.

Marjorie is also recorded by CWGC as serving with the American Ambulance Corps that  suggests she was possibly a FANY/BRCS Ambulance driver

Marjorie was seriously injured on 10th May 1941 when the Alexandra Hotel, Knightsbridge was bombed and died on 11th May 1941 in St. George’s Hospital, London.

My main dilemma is was Marjorie stationed in London and on duty at the Alexandra Hotel or was she on a visit to London from Scotland and a Hotel resident? I have also been unable to ascertain whether she is buried in London or Perthshire.

Any snippet of information to help unravel the mystery will be greatly appreciated

Tony
