Sussex / Sarah Barden born 1771 Mountfield
« on: Monday 12 June 23 21:35 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find out what happened to Sarah Barden, b. ca July 1771, Mountfield, chr. 9 Aug 1771, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah (Fuller) Barden.

Sarah is an executor of her grandfather's will.  Thomas Barden Sr. likely only outlived his son Thomas, her father, briefly. In his will, dated 3 Mar 1790 (but not proved until 1809) he names Sarah, his brother John Barden, and brother in law William Waterhouse (married to his sister Elizabeth) as executors.  By 1809 only William is alive, and he is very old.  Thomas the grandfather lists the children of his son Thomas and mentions his daughter-in-law, also Sarah, still living.

Because Sarah was dead by 1809 I do not believe she is the Sarah Barden who married Edward Smith at Battle on 18 Nov 1791.  I am fairly certain she is still alive in 1841, living with her son Ezekiel Smith in Battle.

A Sarah Barden married James Isted in Battle 9 Jan 1790 but wouldn't this make her name Sarah Isted/Istead in her grandfather's will?

There is also a Sarah Barden who m. 11 Apr 1793 in Icklesham, John Gurr, have not ruled her out but no further information on her.

Any help appreciated.

The Lighter Side / Unexpected sighting
« on: Wednesday 24 May 23 01:13 BST (UK)  »
Have others suddenly seen a relative (usually distant!) pop up on television, radio, or in a news item?  Yesterday my distant relative Sarah Harmer, a Canadian singer, was featured in a news item while we were watching the news.  OH knew who she was, but wasn’t overly impressed that I am related to her! The singer and I have a common Harmer ancestor in Sussex.

Canada / James Swift, Toronto (married Teresa McCarrey)
« on: Wednesday 17 May 23 15:27 BST (UK)  »
Am looking for the specific origins and parentage of James Swift who died in Toronto 23 Nov 1911, b. ca 1834.  He married Teresa (several spellings) McCarrey (several spellings) in York, ON 3 Feb 1864 (on Ancestry there is just a "card" rather than the full entry).

James was b in England, according to the censuses I have found him in.  He is with Teresa in 1871, in Toronto, age 36, she is 26.  They have two children James 5 and Annie 3.  Teresa and children b. USA. (The 1891 gives the kids' bp as Ontario, but I have find no record)

On the 1901 census James is with his daughter Annie, widowed.  He is living at 53 Huntley Street, Toronto, and he declared he came to Canada in 1850.  I cannot find him on the 1851 or 1861 censuses.

I have traced his son James' marriage and Jr.'s wife's death in 1942, at 53 Huntley Street, so am pretty sure I have this right!  No death for James Jr. and cannot find a marriage for Annie or a death for her in Ontario.

Wondering if I have missed a source for finding James Sr.'s biirthplace or parentage.

Canada / Death Record in Ontario, Dec 1973
« on: Wednesday 29 March 23 14:36 BST (UK)  »
I would like to obtain the death certificate or at least the death date for my grandfather's cousin.  He lived in either St. Mary's or Stratford, Ontario, but of course may have died in another county, perhaps in hospital.  I was told they had no record in St. Mary's or Stratford.
His full name was William Cecil Ford and he was born in Westminster, London, England on 14 Jun 1889, the son of Joseph Ford and Mary Ann Weeks.  The story was he ran away to Canada as a teenager.  He served in WWI in the Canadian army.  He never married.
According to my mother's diary, he would have died in November or December of 1973.  Wonder if anyone has access to newspapers of that time?

The Common Room / Hibbert/Heathcote/Coghlan Blackburn, Lancs.
« on: Tuesday 14 March 23 15:38 GMT (UK)  »
Have had no luck finding Elsie Coghlan, registered Mar 1910, in Blackburn.  In the 1911 census she appears with her mother Sarah (nee Hibbert), a widow.

Sarah was the widow of George Henry Coghlan who had died in 1908.  In 1911 she is living with Richard S. Heathcote as his servant.  He is listed as married, and had mistakenly entered his number of children, those alive, as had Sarah.
Sarah had just the one child, Elsie, obviously not Coghlan's child, but possibly Heathcote's, who was taken to court in 1909 by his wife Elizabeth, claiming desertion and abuse.

Elsie, as Hibbert, is with her mother in 1921, no sign of Richard, and very likely Sarah died in 1926 in Blackburn.  I cannot find any trace of Elsie after this, and have checked under all three surnames.  Perhaps fresh eyes might find her for me!

The Common Room / Deportation from USA 1907
« on: Saturday 11 March 23 20:10 GMT (UK)  »
Have found a record on Anc for a George Henry Coghlan, age 39, married (am quite sure he is married to a relative, but can't find the full record online), leaving Liverpool on 9 Oct 1907 and stamped next to his name, Deported per SS Cymria, 6 November 1907.  He was originally heading to Providence in the state of Rhode Island.
Any ideas on why he may have been deported?  I believe he died in the Mar Q in Chorlton district.

The Common Room / Brownlow/Kernon-Kiernan/Wakefield/ Manchester and Cheshire
« on: Thursday 23 February 23 21:27 GMT (UK)  »
I have been looking for years for earliest paternal line's origins (and his first wife, also my ancestor)
Joseph Hibbert was b. ca 1799, Lancashire, died 1852, Salford.  He married ca 1819, Ann ?.  I have not found his baptism or his first marriage, but have his second marriage to Ellen Clare.

Something I was hoping to give me a clue was the fact that his daughter, Harriet Hibbert Fletcher, b. 1824, and full-sister of my ancestor William, was living with Mary Kernon in 1851 (am quite sure Harriet's husband, William Fletcher, was alive but cannot find him in 1851, Harriet is listed as married).  Also with them is Harriet's son John.  They are at 5 Sykes Court, Hulme, Lancs.

In 1861 Mary Kernon is living next door, at 6 Pitt St., Hulme and Harriet is next door at #4.  Both ladies have 19 year old female lodgers with them, and Harriet has her two surviving children, John and Elizabeth Ann.  William died in 1858, and two other children died as infants.

Through doing a lot of digging, I am confident that Mary is the Mary Brownlow who married John Kiernan (notice difference in name) in 1838, daughter of Robert Brownlow.  I found a marriage 1 Apr 1862, of Mary Kiernan, widow, daughter of Robert Brownlow, address is 6 Pitt Street, Hulme. She marries Joseph Wakefield.

Mary's age fluctuates a bit, from being born ca 1805 to ca 1812.

I found them living in Cheshire (Church Coppenhall) in 1871 and 1881.  Their exact deaths are a bit hazy, but I think he is the Joseph who dies in Congleton dist. in 1888.  Mary I am not sure about.

My hope is that Mary is somehow related to Harriet, but proving it might be impossible.  I have not evidence that Mary had any children, so that means a DNA match is unlikely.  Hoping someone has these folks in their tree.
