Hi,

I found my 2GGrandfather, Emanuel MILLER in the 1851 UK Census in Bristol, England with his partner Harriet Mary Dickson/Dixon and several children.

He died in Richmond, NSW in 1885.

Family anecdotes say that Emanuel arrived in Australia c1854 on the SS Great Britain.

I would appreciate if anyone has the references could look Emanuel up to confirm his travelling on the SS Great Britain. I do not believe Harriet Mary accompanied him but remaind in Bristol, eventually returning to Coventry.

I read with great interest Michael Wood's book of the Story of Kibworth and the high incidence of non-conformity in the area of Kibworth (Harcourt, Beauchamp & Smeeton Westerby).


I also have a reference to one of my ancestors (my 6th Great Grand Uncle) Francis Tilley as having his house "licensed for nonconformist worship" in 1724.

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about non-conformity in these villages!

I am trying to find information regarding my 3G-Grandfather, James Bird Hill , who appears to have been a member of the 17th Leicestershire Foot.

James was born 1 Mar 1801 in Burton Overy, Leicestershire, and is reported to have died 31 Jul 1839 in Ghazni Afghanistan, just after the first Battle of Ghazni.

Believed to have served as a member of the First 17th Leicestershire Foot Regiment; the Regiment is known to have been stationed at Parramatta, Sydney, NSW, Australia in 1832, and also Ghaznia, Afghanistan in 1839.

It is apparent from the birth records of 6 of his 9 children, who were born in and around Poona (which was then just outside Bombay), that the entire family was in India during 1839.

I would be interested in any information pertaining to James, or the Regiment's stay in Australia, or the Regiment's actions/history in India/Afghanistan, or any links to written references that might be available in Australia.

I have tried accessing the UK National Archives, but have not had much success, as I can not visit them in person. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information here in Australia about the 17th Leicestershire Foot, which I find rather surprising, so I am guessing I have not yet hit the motherlode for that information here yet.

I am researching James Freeman, b c 1767, transported for 7 years in 1787 on the Ship ALEXANDER arriving Botany Bay 26 January, 1788.

I have a lot of information about James once he arrived in the colony - de facto relationship with Mary Edwards, first public hangman in the Colony, died pauper and buried in St Matthew's CofE Windsor, NSW. I also have his court transcription and arrest info - arraigned in the Lent Hertford Assizes. Information thereon shows him late of Watford.

However, I have next to nothing about him prior to his conviction.

I am hoping that he will have a family somewhere in Hertfordshire, and that one of us will be able to put a family to him!
