Leicestershire / Families in Leicestershire before 1700
« on: Friday 13 July 12 15:22 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I read with pleasure the finds researchers make when searching the various Census Returns, but I often stumble when trying to search for my names in earlier years.

Most of my families originate in Leicestershire, with a high proportion located in the south eastern area around Burton Overy, "the Langtons" and "the Kibworths".

I would love to make contact with anyone with these ancestors PRIOR TO 1700 in Leicestershire:

 . Berridge
 . Groocock
 . Barsbey
 . Witsey
 . Hill
 . Tilley
 . Hardy
 . Measom
 . Bird
 . Arnold
 . Smally
 . Barrett
(plus any variation of spelling!)

Thank you, in advance!

Australia / SS Great Britain Passenger Lists - looking for Emanuel MILLER
« on: Friday 16 March 12 08:16 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I found my 2GGrandfather, Emanuel MILLER in the 1851 UK Census in Bristol, England with his partner Harriet Mary Dickson/Dixon and several children.

He died in Richmond, NSW in 1885.

Family anecdotes say that Emanuel arrived in Australia c1854 on the SS Great Britain.

I would appreciate if anyone has the references could look Emanuel up to confirm his travelling on the SS Great Britain. I do not believe Harriet Mary accompanied him but remaind in Bristol, eventually returning to Coventry.

Thank you!

Kent Lookup Requests / MARYOTT (and variations) - George Alfred MARYOTT b1839, Kent
« on: Sunday 13 November 11 06:37 GMT (UK)  »
I have a brickwall on George Alfred MARYOTT (spelling as per 1923 Australian death certificate, and other family certificates).

In an interview with a Sydney, Australia newspaper shortly before his death, he was quoted as -
  • having been born and lived in Dover,
  • he held the Duke of Wellington's horse at his father's livery stable
  • was a "Man O'Warsman" on the  paddle-wheel wooden steamer Porcupine, which laid the trans-Atlantic cable
  • was on the Flagship WATERLOO in Sheerness
  • sailed to Australia on the ship QUEEN OF AUSTRALIA which hit the Nobby's Head breakwater in Newcastle, NSW, and was repaired at the Cockatoo Dockyard in Sydney in 1863

The only reference I have been able to find in the English BDMs is that there was a George who was son to James MARYOTT and Elizabeth (Hall) Maryott, but I have just discovered a letter from the Office for National Statisics written in 1998 which states categorically that James Maryott and Elizabeth Hall Maryott WERE NOT George Alfred's parents.

If anyone is able to assist me in finding George's parents, I would appreciate the assistance!!!

Leicestershire / Non-Conformists / Non-Conformity in Leicestershire
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 06:47 GMT (UK)  »
I read with great interest Michael Wood's book of the Story of Kibworth and the high incidence of non-conformity in the area of Kibworth (Harcourt, Beauchamp & Smeeton Westerby).

I also have a reference to one of my ancestors (my 6th Great Grand Uncle) Francis Tilley as having his house "licensed for nonconformist worship" in 1724.
[reference "British History Online - "A History of the County of Leicestershire: Volume 5: Gartree Hundred" by J.M. Lee, R.A. McKinley, 1964]

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information about non-conformity in these villages!

I would be interested in hearing from any member researching families in Coggeshall and Feering and villages nearby.

I have James MILLER married to Susanna WILSON in June 1803.
James is son of John MILLER married to Ann BENTLEY c1767.

I have found James in both the 1841 and 1851 UK Census data.

Armed Forces / 1st 17th Leicestershire Foot Regiment - Regiment Postings c 1832-1839
« on: Friday 29 December 06 01:55 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find information regarding my 3G-Grandfather, James Bird Hill , who appears to have been a member of the 17th Leicestershire Foot.

James was born 1 Mar 1801 in Burton Overy, Leicestershire, and is reported to have died 31 Jul 1839 in Ghazni Afghanistan, just after the first Battle of Ghazni.

Believed to have served as a member of the First 17th Leicestershire Foot Regiment; the Regiment is known to have been stationed at Parramatta, Sydney, NSW, Australia in 1832, and also Ghaznia, Afghanistan in 1839.

It is apparent from the birth records of 6 of his 9 children, who were born in and around Poona (which was then just outside Bombay), that the entire family was in India during 1839.

I would be interested in any information pertaining to James, or the Regiment's stay in Australia, or the Regiment's actions/history in India/Afghanistan, or any links to written references that might be available in Australia.

I have tried accessing the UK National Archives, but have not had much success, as I can not visit them in person. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information here in Australia about the 17th Leicestershire Foot, which I find rather surprising, so I am guessing I have not yet hit the motherlode for that information here yet.

Apologies if this topic has already been posted in this forum, but I couldn't find anything relevant when I searched it.

Regards,
Megan from Australia

Armed Forces / 63rd Regiment of Foot (1830, Tasmania) - Sgt MACKIE/MACKEY
« on: Friday 29 December 06 01:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to find information regarding my 3G-Grandfather, Edward Mackey, who appears to have been a Sergeant in the 63rd Regiment of Foot, stationed in/at Macquarie Harbour, Tasmania, and/or Hobart Town, Tasmania c1831.

I have a record of birth of Edward's daughter Elizabeth, born 1831 and registered in the NSW BDM [V18311756 162A/1831, MACKEY, ELIZABETH, Father EDWARD, Mother MARY]. My supposition is that all records for Van Dieman's land would have been referred back to the 'headquarters' in Sydney.

I have information from Ken Larbalestier via http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~garter1/63rdfoot.htm

Quote
63rd Regiment of Foot (The West Suffolk Regiment) 1827- 1835

In May of 1828 the 63rd Regiment of Foot was ordered to proceed to NSW, by detachments, as guards on board convict ships. The Headquarters of the Regiment arrived in Sydney on 18th February 1830 and after landing the convicts, sailed for Van Diemen's Land where the remainder of the Regiment was located, landing there on 22nd March. Major James Fairclough commanded the Regiment on arrival in NSW but Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Logan arrived in November 1830 and assumed command of the Regiment at Hobart Town.

I would be interested in any information pertaining to Edward, or the Regiment's stay in Australia (both NSW and TAS stations), or any links to written references that might be available in Australia.

I have tried accessing the UK National Archives, but have not had much success, as I can not visit them in person. There doesn't seem to be a lot of information here in Australia about the 63rd Foot, which I find rather surprising, so I am guessing I have not yet hit the motherlode for that information here yet.

Apologies if this topic has already been raised, but I was unable to find any reference when I searched RootsChat.

Hertfordshire / FREEMAN James b c 1767 - Transported to Australia
« on: Monday 20 November 06 10:04 GMT (UK)  »
Hi!

I am researching James Freeman, b c 1767, transported for 7 years in 1787 on the Ship ALEXANDER arriving Botany Bay 26 January, 1788.

I have a lot of information about James once he arrived in the colony - de facto relationship with Mary Edwards, first public hangman in the Colony, died pauper and buried in St Matthew's CofE Windsor, NSW. I also have his court transcription and arrest info - arraigned in the Lent Hertford Assizes. Information thereon shows him late of Watford.

However, I have next to nothing about him prior to his conviction.

I am hoping that he will have a family somewhere in Hertfordshire, and that one of us will be able to put a family to him!

Thanks in advance from Oz!
