« on: Thursday 29 September 16 20:00 BST (UK)  »
Hi, my Great Grandfather James McDonnell was born on 10th November,1868 in Ballaghdereen, which was at that time in County Mayo but has been in County Roscommon since 1898.His father was Joseph  McDonnell and his mother was Mary (Stephens) McDonnell. His sponsors or witnesses were Mick McDonnell and Bridget Regan. I don't know if he had any brothers or sisters,or indeed if his parents had any siblings. Any information on these branches of the McDonnell and Stephens familes would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi.
I have a record (albeit transcribed) of the marriage record( 11th February,1868) of Hugh Gallagher of Dooey, Lettermacaward and Bridget Hanlon of Poolbrain. Does anyone know where (or what) was Poolbrain?

Thanks.

Hi, I'm not being notified that a new post has been added to a topic started by me. I have read the problem concerning no notification of new PMs. Is my issue linked to this problem,or have I unwittingly changed a value somewhere in my profile settings?

Regards.

Hi all,

Just this week I discovered a long lost relative had served in the British Army in the 1880s and 1890s and died (and was presumably buried) in Malta in 1892.
His name was Edward Largey, born in Belfast in 1866(birth registered as Edward Largy). He served with 4th battalion Royal Irish Rifles. He died in hospital in Malta on 15th September 1892.Cause of death looks like S C fever!!

I am trying to establish where exactly he is buried in Malta and if his grave would have a (Army) headstone.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Paul.

Donegal / Unknown Lettermacaward native was U S army casualty in WW1
« on: Friday 24 June 16 15:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.

I was reading, on Military Archives Ireland website, the file relating to a Lettermacaward mother who was applying for a military pension in relation to her son, a Captain in the National Army, who was shot and killed during the Irish Civil War in 1923.In one of the letters she sends to the Irish government, she makes reference, by way of comparison, to the generous lump sum and pension received by another Lettermacaward mother whose son died in World War 1 while serving with the U S Army. My question is, does anyone know who this young man(the U S soldier) was?

Thanks.
Paul.

Armed Forces / Dennis Cannon -searching for information once more
« on: Saturday 04 June 16 16:24 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I have been trying for a number of years now to find out more information about my great uncle Dennis Cannon. He died on 21st January 1915 while serving on a tug boat 'The Flying Buzzard' at Aultbea, Loch Ewe, Scotland. The cause of death on his death cert is Drowning. He is commemorated on the CWGC website. He was returned to his native County Donegal for burial. His headstone is a CWGC headstone.

I have never been able to find any information relating to the circumstances of his drowning, nor if he was entitled to any medals, did he receive them, were they never claimed, were they returned?

Any additional information would be much appreciated.

Thank you.
Paul.

United States of America / Henry and Mary Largey, emigrated to USA 1910
« on: Wednesday 04 May 16 20:42 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am looking for any information on Henry Largey and his wife Mary Largey. Henry arrived in New York from Belfast Ireland on 31st July 1910 and was going to Paterson, New Jersey. His wife Mary joined him(she was travelling with Henry's sister, also called Mary Largey(unmarried), arriving in New York on 4th October, 1910.
I can see from Henry's WW1 registration card  1917/1918 that he is still living in N J and now has 2 children.
Henry's WW2 registration card 1942 shows he is  living in Kearny, N J with his wife Mary.

Any additional information about  these  3 Largeys would be most welcome.

Thank you.

The Common Room / British Permit Office, Dublin 1941.Where are the records kept?
« on: Tuesday 26 April 16 13:14 BST (UK)  »
Hi all.

I wasn't sure which section to post this question under.
I have correspondence between my grandfather and some arm of the Irish Govt. dated 1941. My grandfather wrote from Birkenhead  in England enquiring about the delay in his wife and children being issued with visas to allow them to travel to join him in England from the Irish Free State. He receives a letter from John Belton informing him that he should be addressing his concerns to C. S. Collinson in the British Permit Office,Merrion Square, Dublin, and that he has passed my grandfather's letter on to Mr Collinson.

Does anyone know where the records of the British Permit Office in Dublin for 1941 are kept/filed/archived?

Thank you.

Paul.

Hi, I have just received an e-mailed copy of the marriage cert of my great, great grandfather and great, great grandmother from GRO Roscommon, Ireland.  The reason I say the location could be in either County Roscommon or County Mayo is that the wedding took place in Ballaghaderreen, which at the time of the wedding in 1893 was in County Mayo but is now in County Roscommon, due to Local Govt Act changes in 1898. Anyway, enough of the history lesson.
