Roscommon / James McDonnell, Castlerea, born 1866 approx.
« on: Friday 01 April 16 15:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

I am trying to find additional information on my Great Grandfather, James McDonnell, about whom I know very little.

This is what I know.

He was born in approximately 1866.
He was married to a woman called Annie in approximately 1896(states on 1911 census he has been married 15 years). Only one child from this marriage reached adulthood, my Grandmother Katie F McDonnell.
He was married a second time, to (I think) Honor (Honora) Doherty but I don't know if this was before or after he was married to Annie.
He appears on 1901 census living(working) in Liverpool, aged 35, surname mis-transcribed as McDonald.
He appears on 1911 census living in Castlerea, Roscommon, Ireland in the townland of Arm, aged 44.
Other Castlerea placenames associated with him are Ballindrimley and Cloondahara!!
He died in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1941,age recorded as 72 but more likely to have been 75.

That is all I know about him.

My questions are the usual ones.
Did he have any children with his other wife?
Did he have siblings?
Who were his mother and father?
What was his wife Annie's maiden name?
When did his 2 wives die?

Any information would be much appreciated.

Thank you.
Paul.

United States of America / Seeking information on Peter Ward, born 1906
« on: Saturday 19 March 16 12:15 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,
I am seeking information on Peter (Denis?) Ward.
He was born on 14/5/1906 to Patrick Ward and Margaret (Gribben) Ward, in County Down, Ireland.(Northern Ireland did not exist then).
He emigrated to USA,aged 24,leaving Belfast on 24th May 1930 and arriving in New York on 1st June 1930.
His home address in Ireland was Drumnaquoille, Annsboro, County Down and he was going to his Aunt, Miss Catherine Ward, 34? Kingman Road, Somerville, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.
I looked for him in the 1940 US census without success.(that's not to say he isn't in it).
That's all I know about him.He never returned to Ireland. Family lore has it that he did marry and that he  served in the US forces in World War 2.
Any information on him would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Paul.

United States of America / Have I found the right James Gallagher in New York?
« on: Monday 15 February 16 20:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to find details on my Great uncle James Gallagher, who emigrated to New York from Ireland. He was born in 1879, son of Hugh Gallagher and Bridget(Biddy) Gallagher (nee Hanlon).I have found a death on 24th October 1912 in Manhattan for a James Gallagher, aged 32. His parents' names match and he was unmarried. My great uncle was also single but I never heard it said that he died so young.I am looking for any additional information on this gentleman,so as to establish if he is indeed my great uncle. His address at time of death was 351 West 30th Street New York, his occupation is listed as Fireman and he was buried in Calvary Cemetery on 29th October 1912.

Thanks.
Paul.

United States of America / Help needed to find John Cannon emigrating to America.
« on: Thursday 04 February 16 20:47 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, with much help from *Sandra* I have located Patrick and Peter Cannon emigrating to America in 1910 and 1923 respectively. I am assured by 2 different family members that a third brother,John, also went to America.I have tried to find this record without success. John was definitely older than Peter and I think he may also have been older than Patrick, so he may also have emigrated around 1910. Learning from my previous mistake, he may have emigrated from Ireland or Scotland. His father's name was also John Cannon. I have searched extensively for this record before now asking for help. I am wondering if his details have been mis-transcribed.
Any help would be very welcome.
NB Sandra, I didn't want to be so presumptuous as to ask you directly for more help.
Thanks
Paul.

United States of America / Patrick Cannon - When did he sail from Ireland to USA?
« on: Tuesday 02 February 16 19:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all.
I am trying without success to find the record of Patrick Cannon sailing from Ireland to USA,possibly in 1910.His father was John Cannon and they lived in Meenacarn,Lettermacaward,Co Donegal. He was born in 1887.
I have him living with his wife Mary (Duffy) Cannon at 2506 Sharswood Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1914 as per (unfortunately) a death cert for his still born daughter.
I have him still at this address in the 1920 census with his wife and thankfully 3 children born since he lost his daughter. He states on this census return that he emigrated in 1910.
He is still at this address in 1923 as per his younger brother Peter's 'travelling to' address when he emigrates in 1923.
Any help in finding the record of Patrick emigrating, or indeed any information relating to him in USA would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
Paul.

US Lookup Requests / Hugh Gallagher died 3rd June 1962 Connecticut
« on: Sunday 10 January 16 17:54 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I have found a death notice, partially visible, in The Bridgeport Post newspaper on 5th June 1962 for Hugh J Gallagher, of 104 Ruane Street, Fairfield CN. Can anyone find any other death notices or obituaries for this gentleman, or indeed any other information.
I'm fairly sure I have located him in the 1910 US census, boarding at 189 West 15th Street NY with 2 of his brothers.
I then located him in the 1940 US census living at 104 Ruane Street with his wife Sarah and 2 children.
And now his death notice at the same address.
Any additional information or help would be greatly appreciated.
He was my Grandfather's brother.
Thanks.
Paul.

United States of America / What became of the sons of John Gallagher?
« on: Wednesday 16 December 15 14:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all, I can locate my Grandfather's brother, John Gallagher aged 53, living in 42 Sterling Place, Kings (Brooklyn) in the 1940 US census. I can also locate his death on 24th November 1946,while still living at the same address.
I am having trouble finding any useful information on his 3 sons:
(*)Gallagher born 1922 in New York
(*) Gallagher born 1924 in New York
(*) Gallagher born 1928 in New York
I have found bits and pieces on people with these names, but nothing where I can say, this is definitely my mother's first cousin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Paul.

United States of America / Can you complete this sentence for me,please?
« on: Saturday 21 November 15 16:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hi.
I have found (on-line) a death notice for the mother of a person(relative) I cannot find any record of after the 1920 US census. The death notice appears in The Cincinnati Enquirer on April 25th,1968, page 45. The death notice insertion says 'Liddy Mary E (nee Mason) widow of George Liddy, dear mother of' ....  I cannot read any more of the death notice. I am assuming it will say ... mother of George and
1) Mary Liddy, therefore alive and unmarried in 1968
2) Mary Smith for example, therefore alive and married
3) the late Mary ......

Hopefully not the 3rd option, but at least I will know what became of her.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Paul.
