Armed Forces / Re: Dunkirk POW records?
« on: Wednesday 21 September 05 05:48 BST (UK)  »
Upon being released, British POWs had to fill in a form detailing their capture and time in prisons. These forms are now in the National Archive. You can obtain such forms for WWI Officers, WWII all ranks, Korean War all ranks.

The German POW cards were also brought to the UK after the war, these can include a photo of the prisoner. The last that I heard they were with the War Pensions people and not available to the public yet, but I have seen a couple of them.

1860 Army List

Major John Robert Wilton, 60th Foot (The King's Royal Rifle Corps)
Ensign 29 Dec. 1830
Lieutenant 3 Dec. 1841
Captain 14 July 1854
Major 19 Jan. 1858

Joined the 55th Regiment first and served in China 1842 (China Medal); served with 60th Foot in the Indian Mutiny 1857 (Indian Mutiny Medal with 'Delhi' clasp).

H.P. means Half-Pay. A sort of semi-retirement, kept his rank and commission but did not serve so only drew half of his pay, but could be recalled at any time for service.

6 Sept. 1916 the 1st Gloucesters were in trenches Bazentin Rd – Thistle Alley – Chester St. – Mill St.
The War Diary records only the word - "quiet"

He was probably wounded by a shell or maybe a sniper. There was no general action that day for the 1st Glosters.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: North Riding Lunatic Asylum

Could you tell me if the records of the asylum include the staff? I am interested in Robert Murray who worked as an attendant at the asylum from around 1881 to 1901 when he died.
