Martha MCCULLOUGH, an ancestor of my wife, had her death registered twice, in County Antrim, in 1877. The first registration had errors, so a second registration was done, correcting the errors.

My wife's great grandfather arrived in New Zealand on the same voyage. We found passenger lists for him and his family on Ancestry, and on Family Search.

Have you looked on Papers Past? There are shipping reports in The Star and The Herald for 29th of January.

Unfortunately, I don't know where Jeremiah's family came from, in Ireland. A townland name was recorded on my great grandfather Hugh's birth, in 1855, but it is unreadable.

Jeremiah's parents were Thomas FARRELL, a salt worker; and Alison SLAVEN. They lived in St Quivox, Ayrshire, in the 1830s.

There are a number of FARRELL families in Stevenston - including mine, who were there from the 1880s. I'm not sure if they are linked to Ruskie's FARRELLS, but I haven't traced all the lines descending from my 2nd great grandfather Jeremiah FARRELL, who was born in Ireland, but was married in Ayrshire in 1829.

I have a distant cousin (William HANVEY), who on his marriage in Glasgow in 1918, has both parents deceased. His mother Agnes, though, died in 1922, and I haven't found a death for his father, who is not noted as deceased on Agnes' death.

Have you tried Find My Past for British military records?
