Staffordshire / Lilian Whitehead (1906-1979) who is her father.
« on: Tuesday 12 August 14 12:45 BST (UK)  »
I have posted short questions before, then had to fill in or say I already knew that, so here is a long one.

From the oral history - to how I think it fits the records - to oops was she illegitimate??

--------------------------
What I am told by my mother.
Lilian Whitehead from Stoke (abt 1906 from death record 1979 in Isle of Man)
  Mother Anna Whitehead
  Father unknown
Older brother John (possibly with a twin who died early), he was a publican in Staffs.
Mother later married Jack/John Walton (He was a publican in Stoke)
Half siblings; Rose, Clare and Frank (Rose had a twin who died early)

So I think I can pick up the family in 1911
  Civil Parish:    Audley
  County/Island:    Staffordshire
Street address:    16 Colclough St, Talke Pitts, Staffs
  Registration district:    Newcastle under Lyme
  Registration District Number:    359
  Sub-registration district:    Audley
  ED, institution, or vessel:    7
  Household schedule number:    183
  Piece:    16431

This gives me a 3 year old marriage with 2 kids, and it looks like the guy took on the previous kids and has a brother in law as a lodger.
  William Henry Walton    44
Hannah Walton    32  b Ashton Under Lyme
John Walton    15  b Fenton, Staffs
Lilian Walton    5  b Stoke, Staffs
  Frank Walton    3
  Clara Walton    2
Thomas Whitehead 36  b Ashton Under Lyme, Staffordshire

I can chase Hannah and Thomas back to 1881 (but loosing Hannah in 1901)
  Occupation:    Scholar
  Registration district:    Wolstanton
  Sub-registration district:    Wolstanton
  ED, institution, or vessel:    1a
  Neighbors:    View others on page
  Piece:    2704
  Folio:    13
  Page Number:    20

The family
  Alfred Whitehead    34
  Harriet Whitehead    36
  Fred Whitehead    10
  Robert Whitehead    8
Thomas J. Whitehead    5  b Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England
Hannah Whitehead    2  b Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England

So do people agree it is a good fit for the family as described, Anna -> Hannah, Jack -> William and Clare -> Clara are problematic. Maybe Jack was a nickname?

If I have all that correct, can anyone find Hannah and John in 2001?

And how about Lilians dad, was Hannah unmarried or did short marriage(s) slip though the censuses?

Ireland / Charlotte Keiho (1811-1875)
« on: Friday 08 August 14 16:07 BST (UK)  »
Sorry a bit of a cross post, but I got no joy in the London board.

Charlotte apears in 1 Jul 1832 marrying William Patrick Gahagan/Gagan (1810-1858) at St Anne Soho, London. The wedding bans show a Patrick Keiho as a witness so a brother or her father (or possibly both I suppose) is called Patrick.

I cannot seem to get anything on her before that, I wonder if Keiho is an English version of an Irish name, something Keough or something like that, does it seem likely?

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / A place in Scotland
« on: Thursday 07 August 14 11:35 BST (UK)  »
I have a place name that appears 3 times on a Scottish birth cert, I cannot make it out.

I have ancestry transcriptions which give Canonbie for one and Teviothead for two, cannot see it...

The birth was [Francis] Pringle in 1855 to William Pringle (1824-1890) and Elizabeth Dickson/Dixson (1829-1885)

Roxburghshire / Elizabeth Dickson (1829-1885)
« on: Tuesday 05 August 14 15:42 BST (UK)  »
My family tree has lead back to this lady from Canonbie, from census I have parents as James (1792 Canonbie) and Mary (1798 England), she has a sister Mary whose wedding cert is on ancestry giving as Mary Young as the mother this then agress with baptism for Elizabeth.

Mary Young born in England around 1798 gives way too many possibilties so might be a dead end.

James Dickson/Dixson/Dixson around 1792 in Canonbie is not that straight forward either, there seem to be a number of James Dicksons born around that time in Canonbie.

I think it is one of;

James Dixon (1792) - parents - James Dixon and Elizabeth (Betty) Knox.
James Dixon (1791) - parents - James Dixon and Mary Ershman/Earshman/Ershment.
James Dixon (1795) - parents - Simon Dixon and Mary Tinning.

Any one of these James could have married Mary Young, but which...

For a little more fog, James Dixon and Mary Young seemed to get married twice, there is one in Langholm in 1809 (a bit early) and another in Canonbie in 1828 (a bit late).

I think the second marriage is the right one, the census shows children Robert and Sarah in 1821 and 1826, then James in 1829, my guess that Robert and Sarah are children of James brother, the James and Elizabeth pairing has a Robert in 1789, then dads name was used for the first born boy.

I have just about convinced myself, but cannot help thinking there are plenty of James Dixsons around, is there a specialist here, with a good family tree for this lot?

London and Middlesex / Charlotte Keiho (1811-1875)

The wedding bans show a Patrick so brother, father or both are likely called patrick.

Lancashire / Lillian Kerman (1897 -1989) - Victor Levy (?-?)
« on: Saturday 26 July 14 12:44 BST (UK)  »
Trying to find anything on my great granddad, oral history has it he was Victor Levy, if it matters most likely he was Jewish.

I can find no record of LK marrying VL, but thought maybe it was in a synagogue and perhaps the records are not online - with ancestry at least.

They had a daughter Honor Levy (1921 Bury Lancaster - mother recorded as Kennan), so I presume a marriage should be just before that. I believe she was an only child.

I have a quandry following part of the tree, James Aspley (1872-1948) seems to have married Clara Harris in 1892 in West Brom.

However the children of the marriage cross the time when maiden names get added and the Maiden name Clive is used.

The family turn up at 3 Granby Road, Stockingford, Nuneaton, Warwickshire, England int he 1911 census. (Source Citation: Class: RG14; Piece: 18473. Ancestry.com. 1911 England Census... )

That return is a bit scrambled with boys called Jane and another called "Vo??", but the kids can all be worked out from the birth records. The wife is "Cle Jane Aspley"

If it were not for the Clive maiden name it would all look perfect. I cannot find any C J Clive marrying James Aspley.

Can anyone tell me where I have gone wrong - or explain why I am right?
