Europe / what is a kohlenzicher?
« on: Wednesday 10 August 16 07:12 BST (UK)  »
W Schmidt arrived Australia in 1886 from Germany and is listed as a kohlenzicher. google translate doesn't help much, can anyone tell me what he did? I think it must have something to do with shovelling coal?

Many thanks in advance

The Common Room / least info obtained from a certificate
« on: Saturday 07 May 16 12:26 BST (UK)  »
I finally shelled out for a death certificate that I thought would provide a few clues or at least confirm identity, only to receive the transcription with almost everything except the name and age (which I already knew) answered as "unknown". Very frustrating! (Although lack of information may possibly confirm identity, as I think the gentleman in question was trying to remain "lost".)

What's the most frustrating lack of information you've received from a certificate? Does this happen often?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Arthur KELLS conscripted WW1?
« on: Thursday 07 April 16 12:57 BST (UK)  »
I recently found a reference to my grandfather in Papers Past which states he was drawn for service in Sept 1917. From a little google research I see that not everyone conscripted actually fought, some became conscientious objectors and some left to go to Australia where there was no conscription at the time.  Can anyone direct me to where I might find out more about what happened to those whose names were on the ballot? Were they reservists? Did they do any training? I'm assuming Arthur didn't serve in the NZ forces, and in fact he does turn up in Australia a couple of years later, but I'm not sure if that's the reason.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, would it be possible to restore this photo which I was recently given of my g grandfather's sister Sylvia Kells?

(I hope I have scanned this ok, first time I've done one for restoration. Let me know if I need to do something different.)

Many thanks in advance

Australia / what happened to Anna BRUNNER?
« on: Tuesday 22 March 16 06:04 GMT (UK)  »
I knew that my gg grandmother Magdalena BRUNNER emigrated to Australia in 1872, but only recently discovered that her parents Jacob and Anna also emigrated from Baden, Germany in 1873, along with their youngest daughter Mina arriving in Queensland. It appears Jacob died in Brisbane in 1875, and I think Mina married in 1880 at Manning River, having 2 children at Copeland in 1881 and 1883 and a third in Waterloo in 1885, and living mostly in Wollongong after that.

But I can't find what happened to Anna, whether she remarried, or where she died. On Magdalena's marriage cert in Queensland 1872 she gives her mother's maiden name as GIRRS, and in 1883 she marries again this time saying her mother's name is Hannah KOHLER (although it was a bigamous marriage, so I'm not sure how much truth is in that name). When they emigrated, Anna's age was 46, so born around 1827.

If anyone can help track Anna down, I would be most appreciative.

« on: Tuesday 15 March 16 02:48 GMT (UK)  »
Hello, I found this photograph amongst my grandmother's photos and am trying to work out if she is the girl at front left (she was born 1902). Would it please be possible for someone to guess the date? It's a fairly glossy postcard.

Many thanks in advance

Warwickshire / Thomas Walters 1861 census Leamington, completed
« on: Tuesday 08 March 16 11:57 GMT (UK)  »
I've been searching for Thomas WALTERS in the 1861 census. He was born in 1840 in Newcastle upon Tyne, his brother Horatio was born in 1842 at Chorlton. I think he was with his parents Thomas and Jane at Sheffield in 1841, and with his aunt at Bilston in 1851 (called by his middle name Mortimer). His father had died in 1844.

I recently found a Thomas WALTERS in Leamington in 1861 the right age, although it says his place of birth was Birmingham, living with James and Louisa HANDLEY and Louisa's siblings. I'm wondering if this could be my Thomas? I can't see any other Thomas WALTERS born around 1840 in the Birmingham area (there is a Daniel Thomas but he's accounted for, I think in Staffordshire in 1861).

So I'm really after a second opinion. Does this sound feasible? I can't trace any Thomas born 1840 in Birmingham in any other census, so perhaps he either fibbed or it was just assumed he came from Birmingham. My Thomas emigrated to Australia in 1863.

If anyone is interested, there is this thread from a couple of years ago when I first started asking rootschatters about Thomas, http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=691359.45 although we couldn't find him in 1861.

Thanks in advance - all opinions welcomed even if you think I'm barking up the wrong tree!

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Anna who?
« on: Saturday 20 February 16 08:08 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to work out Anna's last name. This is from her daughter's marriage in 1872 in Queensland, but the family were from Baden. I'm thinking the name is something like Geier, but spelled as it sounds. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / 1851 census lookup please James WALTERS
« on: Friday 15 January 16 01:18 GMT (UK)  »
I'm trying to find James WALTERS in 1851 possibly aged about 40 born in Bilston.

I know he was baptised at Darlington St Methodist Wolverhampton in 1813, although he might not have been a baby then. Other siblings were born in 1804 and 1806. I think the family lived in Bilston, though I haven't been able to find out what happened to James. There is a burial for a James WALTERS at Bilston on 15 Mar 1853 age 45, so could be him, but pretty common name, so I'm not sure.

Any help finding him on the census would be most appreciated!
