Carmarthenshire / Who is Lucretia EVANS
« on: Wednesday 26 May 21 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Not really sure where to put this request ...

I have been tracing a family of EVANS who arrived in Tasmania, Australia in 1855. They were from Llanfynydd originally. The "Register of Hiring and Disposal of Immigrants" shows the family:
Thomas  50
Emma    50
John       27
Maria      25
Rachel    23
Lucretia  21
Margaret 20
Thomas  16
Jane       14
Eliza        9

I have found the family in 1841 (HO 107/1380/15 pg1) and 1851 (HO 107/2471/134 pg 10)
I also have all the children's baptisms (including some that died prior to emigration) and Thomas and Emma's marriage.

However, I cannot find any records for Lucretia - neither baptism nor on a census. There is something written next to her name on the register which I can't quite make out "something Morgan"

I realise that she may not be a child of Thomas and Emma, but merely emigrated with them, but I can't find a suitable candidate back in Carmarthenshire.

Any suggestions or help in finding her would be most welcome.  :)

Would someone please be able to tell me what month Eliza was born? This margin entry on her baptism at Llanfynydd 31 May 1849.

Thanks in advance (I'll probably be away all day tomorrow, so apologies in advance for not responding tomorrow  ;) )

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Marriage place (completed with thanks)
« on: Tuesday 11 May 21 05:39 BST (UK)  »
Would some one be able to tell me where this marriage took place please? I'm pretty sure it's in Scotland. The document is in an Australian Army file, fortunately it included this marriage certificate, though I have trouble reading the handwriting.

Thanks in advance.

Technical Help / new phone can't log out of RootsChat
« on: Thursday 06 May 21 05:24 BST (UK)  »
I have been given a new phone (yesterday), and after logging in here using Firefox, there doesn't appear to be any button across the top of RootsChat page so that I can log out. The  "unread posts" buttons is there, but no log out.

I've tried closing Firefox, but I'm still logged in.

Any suggestions as to how to log out?

The Common Room / ss moreton bay stuck in suez canal 1956
« on: Saturday 17 April 21 06:00 BST (UK)  »
Feeling very pleased with myself!

I knew that my parents travelled on a cargo/passenger ship from Sydney to London in 1956, and they always said that they ran aground in the Suez Canal. After the recent event with the EverGiven I was reminded of the story though I didn't read anything in the papers about previous groundings that mentioned my parent's voyage.

Don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I just searched passenger lists and found their names on the Moreton Bay, and sure enough an item in The Times  (10 Jan 1956) saying that the Moreton Bay had been stuck in the Suez Canal for several hours causing a south-bound holdup in traffic.

Family story confirmed!  :D

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / John MALLING occupation
« on: Friday 11 December 20 04:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Would someone be able to tell me what John MALLING's occupation is please? This is from his marriage to Julia BROWN in 1854 at Stepney. On the 1871 it is warehouseman, and on his daughter's marriage in 1884 she says he is a carman (if I have the correct man  :) ).

Thanks in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / "Harnton Mill" Northumberland?
« on: Monday 07 December 20 02:08 GMT (UK)  »
On another thread there is some conjecture about where Ann DODGSON (nee HUTCHINSON) is born. This is a snip from the 1861 census - looks like "Harnton Mill"? Any other suggestions?
