Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Wilhelmina Schmidt for restoration
« on: Sunday 07 August 22 04:55 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I've recently been scanning and sorting all my family photos and tomkin suggested the restoration experts were in need of work (  ;) ) There are a few photos that need a bit of attention, especially the ones that are in frames that I can't remove, so have tried photographing them rather than scanning. I've tried various exposures and different lighting, but unfortunately the quality is not as good as I would like, so I wondered whether the experts here might be able to clean them up a bit, and remove some of the reflections that appear due to the glass of the frames?

Here's one - my great grandmother Wilhelmina SCHMIDT (1862-1949).

Many thanks in advance.

Australia / death notice lookup - completed with thanks
« on: Wednesday 03 August 22 10:42 BST (UK)  »
Hello, Is it please possible to look up a death notice in the Herald Sun (Melbourne) on 12 July 2010? The name is Winifred Doreen (Wyn) STEPHENS - Ryerson also has it listed under EGAN. Or could some one kindly point me to where I may be able to find a copy? (I only have access to The Age.)

Many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / help with family name
« on: Friday 29 July 22 10:58 BST (UK)  »
I have a lovely picture of a "mature" couple cutting a wedding cake. On the back in my grandmother's handwriting is this note.

"Marge and Harry Winter (one of the ?????? girls)"

Can anyone please help with suggestions for the name?

I've looked in NSW marriages but the only Harold WINTER and "Mar*" marriages in suitable time periods (probably 1920-1940, though I could be wrong) were to spouses Mary KERR and Martha JAMIESON, and it's definitely not those. Though of course, the wedding may not have been in NSW.

Many thanks in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / are these the same person?
« on: Sunday 24 July 22 06:49 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I've almost convinced myself this is the same person, however not sure if it's just wishful thinking. A second opinion would be much appreciated! The colour photo was with a memorial card for Charles William ROBERTSON (1921-1981), so I'm assuming that's who is is.

Australia / who lived at this address? completed with many thanks
« on: Monday 04 July 22 12:00 BST (UK)  »
I've been scanning my mother's photo album and discovered an address written on the back of a photo of a house.

"2 Carbnet Place, Seacombe Gardens, South Australia".

This is a bit of a puzzle for me - my mother lived in Mackay, Queensland and all the other photos around this one are of places and people in Mackay. Based on the photos around it, the time period would be the 1940s to very early 1950s. So far as I know there were no family in SA. I've been having a hunt around with no luck so far. I've looked at Electoral rolls on Ancestry for South Australia and using "Seacombe Gardens" as a keyword, which brings up a couple of families, however the address is merely "Seacombe Gardens" in the subdivision of Glenelg, ie no street name.

I've also looked on trove with no luck so far.

Can anyone offer suggestions or help to find who lived there?

Many thanks in advance.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / where is this #4
« on: Saturday 02 July 22 11:51 BST (UK)  »
My last query was answered very quickly! Here's another.

I think these photos were taken to show off the car rather than the location, but I am wondering where they are. Two views from a slightly different angle of I'm assuming the same place, somewhere in England in 1956 I guess. The building in photo1 with the double ionic columns looks quite distinctive. (Also wondering if they were allowed to drive onto the grass, or whether they could get away with it being tourists?  ;D )

Any suggestions as to the location would be most welcome.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / where is this #3
« on: Friday 01 July 22 10:39 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Not sure if this is easy or hard! On to sorting my parent's photos now and have a few of their trip to the UK and Europe in 1956 that I'm not sure exactly where they are. This one has on the back "Typical country church" - very helpful, thanks Dad.  ;D My parents lived in London for a while but did car trips around on weekends, and then toured through Scotland, and on to parts of Europe, but I think this would be in England somewhere.

Any suggestions of location would be most welcome.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / what type of car is this?
« on: Wednesday 15 June 22 11:05 BST (UK)  »
I have this photograph in my collection but am not sure of it's significance. I know my g grandfather owned a Daimler in 1915 (in Sydney) and various other cars, but not sure if this car was his, or when the photograph was taken. Or why there are funny slogans written on each panel!

On the back it has a note : "Model 96"

Any help in identifying the car would be greatly appreciated.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / German translation please
« on: Friday 10 June 22 12:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello, would it please be possible for someone to translate this verse which I presume is written in German? It is on the back of a photo of a dinner party in 1952 in Basel - so it could be Swiss German (though my grandfather whose photo it was spoke German).

I'm guessing the first line is:
"Yes, yes the wine is good"
and I can see "water" in the last line but the rest is beyond me!

Thanks in advance.
