Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: unknown group in Islington?

The background very much looks like a park, I thought possibly a cycling club or Bowling Club.

One of the chaps seem to have a medal with "A" on a chain, could this be an award or something ? Is there any change of a larger picture of the medal ?

Sarah :)

Not very good at his whole scanning thing yet, but I tried scanning at 600 dpi and enlarging the medallion, but it was very pixilated. I'll have another go and post it here if successful.  :)

Thank you so much everyone for your time and interest! Some very interesting observations and much food for thought.  :)

If this is a picture of my g grandmother (and the more I look at it, the more I think it may be a possibility), in the 1901 census she is a servant at the vicarage of Holy Trinity, Hoxton. She married later that year and lived at "Annette's Cres" on Essex Rd, Islington. I can't see anything on google maps street view that looks right in those areas for the photo, but of course they are mostly more modern apartments now (except the terraces where my grandmother was born which are still standing and probably quite chic now??)

Does anyone think this might be in Ickford? I would imagine Ickford to have a bit more of a rural feel.

I think the suggestion that this was an outing of some kind, whether sporting or bus trip (charabanc - love that word, thanks Carol!) is probably correct.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Ruby Mary SWAIN

This may be the birth you are referring to but it does not seem to be correct

18763/1891     SWAIN    RUBY B    CHARLES F    ELLEN    LEICHHARDT

Cheers Janette

Yes, I saw this entry when looking for Ruby SWAIN's marriage details and wondered whether that was where the 1891 birth date may have originated. Ruby R SWAIN married James S Daly in Sydney in 1916, so definitely a different person.

Not sure whether this the right board to post this on ...

I love this photo although I have no idea who the people are. I love the different collar heights, ties, bow tie, lack of tie, 1 lack of lady's gloves, some looking casual some more formal. Whilst the photo was with my grandmother's photos and I guess dates around 1900-1910 (? - please correct me if I'm wrong! the photo is stuck on plain dark green card with nothing on the back), I think it's in Islington, but my mother seems convinced it's in Ickford (my grandmother spent time in both). Any suggestions?

Also, any idea what the group may be? 4 women and 11 men, some looking better off than others? My g grandfather had something to do with very early cars, and my g grandmother was a servant in a vicarage if that helps at all? (Possibly the lady in the middle with the big lace collar could be my young g grandmother, although hard to say for sure)

Any help would be most appreciated

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Re: Needhams, Waterhouses or neither?

I reckon the fellow at the back right is the soldier, and the fellow next to him is so similar they must be brothers, so I would think they are the Waterhouses. Can't say for sure, but I can't see a resemblance of any of them to the wedding photo.  :)

Thanks again Carol, good to have that confirmed. Funny that I never really looked at it until I scanned it.  :)

Oh thank you Carol, that is really beautiful!!!

When I scanned this photograph I realised Mary Jane is holding some flowers and wondered if this is a wedding photo (it was her 2nd and his 3rd marriage) which was in 1897. Does the style of clothes and photograph sound right for this date?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

(2nd attempt at scanning photographs - hope I've done it right this time!)

Thanks Carol, much appreciated!  :D
