The Common Room / ss moreton bay stuck in suez canal 1956
« on: Saturday 17 April 21 06:00 BST (UK)  »
Feeling very pleased with myself!

I knew that my parents travelled on a cargo/passenger ship from Sydney to London in 1956, and they always said that they ran aground in the Suez Canal. After the recent event with the EverGiven I was reminded of the story though I didn't read anything in the papers about previous groundings that mentioned my parent's voyage.

Don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I just searched passenger lists and found their names on the Moreton Bay, and sure enough an item in The Times  (10 Jan 1956) saying that the Moreton Bay had been stuck in the Suez Canal for several hours causing a south-bound holdup in traffic.

Family story confirmed!  :D

The Common Room / Re: George Symons born USA

Adelaide had a sister , Violet L Mattick  born 1879 , who travelled to America and arrived New York 24 May 1903 on the ship New York.

Violet married John Symons 2 days later :

On the manifest for the SS New York which sailed from Southampton on 16 May 1903, Violet L MATTICK, 23 from Oxfordshire, (with $100) says she is going to join her "future husband 18 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island"

I have now found a Violet Symons - widow! - innkeeper of the Admiral Rodney in Ilfracombe in 1911

"The license of the Admiral Rodney was permanently transferred from Mr. T.G.H. Church to Mrs. Violet Milner Symons."
Thursday,  July 20, 1911, North Devon Journal

She didn't hold the license for long - a "protection order" was made on 19 March 1912, and the license transferred to Mr Charles E HAMMETT on 15 April 1912.

On the index to birth registrations in NY, it has Violet's full name as Violet Lillian MATTICK. The item about the license transfer could have the wrong middle name.  :-\

Modifed to add:
Oh, have found her baptism at St Mary, Henley on Thames 25 Feb 1878 - Violetta Hilda - so somewhat in between Milner and Lillian.  :)

I think Adelaide Leigh may be Adelaide Amanda Mattick, daughter of George Shadrach Daniel Mattick , who was baptised 22 Mar 1860 at Stoke Gabriel.

Yes, that is a much better fit.  :)
There is an item mentioning Mrs Adelaide LEE representing her mother Adelaide MATTICK as executrix for her husband George S D MATTICK at Ilfracombe in 1916 (Thursday,  Nov. 16, 1916, North Devon Journal).

Modified to add:
For interest, his death notice -
"MATTICK .- March 26, at 7, Champernowne Terrace, Ilfracombe, Mr. George S. D. Mattick, aged 81 years."

London and Middlesex / Re: Baptisms 1800s London England

Forgot to include Matilda - bap 1823 at St Anne, Limehouse - father a Gentleman of Limehouse. (When Matilda marries in 1839, she says her father, decesed, was a jeweller.)

Also John, bap 1831 at St John, Hackney: father a jeweller of Cambridge Heath.

There is  a report of the house of Joseph LEVERGE being broken into in 1828 when a number items were stolen (lots of jewellery among other things),- 64 Whitechapel Rd.
Tuesday,  Mar. 11, 1828,  Police Gazette

You can see the family of Joseph (the jeweller, now deceased) and Elizabeth in 1841 at Henry St, Tower Hamlets in 1841:
Elizabeth  46
Eliza         16
Alfred        14
Edward     12
John          10
Sophia      8

I assume you are looking at the children of Joseph and Elizabeth LEVERGE?

It looks like children Charles and Elizabeth (bap 1821) have residence Mile End Old Town and father's occupation - mariner.

The baptism of Joseph in 1817 (at the lying in hospital) has father's occupation musician, "of the C. Grant East ???

Eliza (bap 1824 at St Leonard) has father a mariner of Bethnal Green Rd.

Mary Ann (bap 1826 at St John) has father a Gentleman of London Field.

There is an Alfred in 1828 - father is a jeweller of Cambridge Heath.

So a few Joseph and Elizabeth LEVERGE families around the same time.  ;)

If it is daughter Sarah, where is she in 1841? I think it is the same person.  :-\

Slightly (?) clearer image.

Cornwall Lookup Requests / Re: Marriage lookup for Thomas TONKIN and Ann DAVIES

Doesn't help you at all, but I did a quick look in newspapers to see if I could find anything for your man. I love the entry after the death notice for this Thomas TONKIN. (Can't attach an image here, so here's  a transcription.)

" Dead ... Thomas Tonkin of Polgar in Cornwal, [sic]
Esq., universally lamented by his Aquaintance. Upwards
of 40 Cows belonging to one at Tottenham Court, uni-
versally lamented by all their Aquaintance.
Mr. Hill,
an Upholder, wealthy.
N.B. If great Men and Cattle die so fast, we shall
scarce have room to bury them in our Paper."
