Here's their marriage in Nottinghamshire in St Stephen's Sneinton: 15 July 1866 (on FreeReg). Unfortunately doesn't give any other info - no parents names or witnesses. :(

Hi Paige 20, welcome to rootschat!

I checked on familysearch, and it appears your Solomon Holmes b 1846 in Howden (remember this is when the birth is registered, so the month doesn't have to reflect the actual birth date) is a 5 yr old 'pauper' in the 1851 census and 14 yr old apprentice in 1861. (I'm not on ancestry either, but someone else might be able to look these up for you.) In 1871 he's living in Nottinghamshire with

Solomon Holmes, self, 24, b Oden, Yorkshire
Elizabeth Holmes, wife, 23, b London, Nottinghamshire
William, son, 4, b Nottingham
George, son, 2, b Derby
Albert, son, 0, b Retford.

I'm assuming he went to Ohio? I noticed some other records for marriage and death of his children, including the George and William in the 1871 census.

Will keep looking for his parents :)

I notice on Alan's military records he gives his address as Tally Ho, and occupation as orchardist. Not sure, but sounds like he was at Tally Ho Boys' Training Farm in Victoria (close to where he enlisted as well). Here's a little info about it: http://www.findandconnect.gov.au/guide/vic/E000119
A long way from his father's address in Broadmeadow NSW.

Hi Green Gables,

I think you should start at the beginning with what you know for sure. Having a quick look at all your William Taylors got me going round in circles too. I can see baptism for William Robert Taylor in Liverpool 10 Sept 1884, but the parents are William and Mary Ann? (on familysearch) Whereas there are two William Taylors b 1884 in Liverpool, 6 in West Derby (and about 80 born in Lancashire!) There is a marriage for William Henry and Mary Louisa in West Derby in Jun qtr 1877 (Mary Louisa b Sep qtr 1854) - all on Free BDM.

You should try to check the census info to make sure you have the right family. Maybe post a lookup on the Lancashire board if you don't have access yourself.

Good luck!

Thanks Nigel,

I don't know ... sounds a bit iffy. I think I'll try to find some other clues, maybe in a will. Residence in Steeple Barton doesn't necessarily mean baptised there, does it?. I might look a bit further afield. Or I might put it in too hard basket to come back to later! You've given me so much info to keep me going for a while. Thank you very much again :D

It looks like 199 St George's Square, but since that doesn't exist (in Pimlico anyway as far as I can tell) do you think it might be 19a?

Dad's family name was Coles so I guessed at the "o" but it could be an "a".

Ah, of course, Coles it is then :-[

Yes I agree, does look like Wharton: Caherc ... something

I can't thank you enough Nigel!

Yes I think 1712 does seem unlikely, especially if she's still having children in 1779 ... maybe she was baptised as Elizabeth? :-\ "Elizabeth Ann" or "Ann Elizabeth"?
