Ayrshire / Re: James Martin occupation?
« on: Tuesday 10 February 15 15:19 GMT (UK)  »
Agree general teacher an error, as he came from a long list of miners couldn't figure the teacher
  thing out.

OPR 1852/53 James Martin is a child of 8 who died of scarlatina.

Listed 1841 as agricultural labourer and 1851 as pauper (stone breaker) both at Knockshoggle
  Holm, Coylton.

Must have died between 1851 and 1861 as recorded as deceased on son George's death and
also wife Elisabeth was widow on her death in 1867 at Dreghorn.

Even if he is recorded as a pauper in 1851 there should be a record of his death somewhere?
Was there a poorhouse in that area at that time?

Ayrshire / James Martin occupation?
« on: Monday 09 February 15 23:41 GMT (UK)  »

I have found 3 occupations for the following:

    James Martin b1788 Sorn
On son's death record in 1861 listed as general teacher
On wife's death record in 1867 listed as labourer
On 1851 census listed as pauper formerly stone breaker at Coylton

Have been unable to find death record and can't understand the different occupations.

      Thanks fifer 1947

It was an OPR record, the parents married 2 years after the birth.

Ayrshire / Natural or lawful birth record
« on: Saturday 07 February 15 23:01 GMT (UK)  »
I've found a female birth entry saying natural daughter of the father, no
mother mentioned. Other births on same document say lawful daughter,
is there a difference? Is the natural one illegitimate?

Ayrshire / Re: George Martin - Miner b 1826
« on: Friday 30 January 15 22:34 GMT (UK)  »

Thanks to loobylooayr and sallyyorks  for helping me with my request.

I thought the accident would be a roof fall as he suffered paralysis

Noticed some are described as miners and others as colliers. Would colliers
      be digging only coal?

Ayrshire / George Martin - Miner b 1826
« on: Thursday 29 January 15 23:07 GMT (UK)  »

     Looking for help tracing a possible mining accident resulting in the death of the following;

             George Martin
             b 1826 Coylton
             d 1861 Dreghorn
m 1847 Coylton to Lydia Faddies
Died of spine paralysis, reported by Procurator Fiscal FC Gross
James Martin, father and Elisabeth Balfour, mother.

Where would I find records of mining accidents for 1861?

Scotland / Re: ScotlandsPeople - Why is it so expensive?

Like many researchers starting out I have wasted credits on SP but am now looking
elsewhere before and narrowing down before I commit my credits.

Very lucky where I live, the local Heritage Centre gives 20 per cent discount on top
up cards which cost £5.60 instead of £7.00 which helps a great deal.

Ayrshire / Re: Hugh Tait b1828 Saltcoat

  Hello

Just a thought about Hugh lodging with the Lusk family in Manse Street Saltcoats.
Most of the inhabitants in this area were likely to be of Irish origin according to the census.
  Hope this helps.

What a coincidence, my Rusty was a very handsome Golden Retriever sadly no longer with us.
