Hi
Not quite sure how to explain my query but here goes!
I’ve been trying for some time to trace a marriage 1846/7ish and the susequent birth of a child.
By 1851 the wife/mother (name unknown to me) had died and the child was living with grandparents whilst his father, living/working elsewhere, was listed as a widower. I think the marriage probably took place in either Orsmkirk, Liverpool or West Derby districts and the child, said on all census returns to have been born in Liverpool, may of course have been born and registered in West Derby District.
I have copy certificates from GRO of a second marriage in Southport in 1852 which confirms the groom was a widower (no children from this marriage as far as I’m aware) and a third marriage in Liverpool in 1855 ( one child in 1859). Both Christian and surnames of father and son are particularly commonplace except for a middle name which they share and which helped me trace the second and third marriages and identify them on censuses. Frustratingly, the middle name appears not to have been used for the first marriage or the registration of the birth of the first child which are the events in which I’m particularly interested.
I’ve had several incorrect certificates at £7 a pop and am loth to go down the road of ordering more without a bit more certainty. I no longer live in the area but contacted Liverpool Registrar’s Office some time ago who replied after about six weeks but refused to do a search without more definite information. I think they said searches were taking about three months at that time so I suspect they were under pressure
Has anybody any helpful suggestions to make which don’t involve me in a great deal of expense? Comparison of the signatures on the three marriage registers, second and third of which are said to have been signed by the groom, occurs to me as one possible way of solving my dilemma but is probably impossible to do.
Hope this tale is not too garbled but I know Rootschatters love a challenge and hope someone can see a way through.
Many thanks if you’ve read this far!
Marie.
PS Nothing on IGI which helps.
