The Common Room / Live long and prosper ; genes or social conditions ?
« on: Friday 20 May 16 01:03 BST (UK)  »
I have come across family members who live well into 80 s or 90's

Would like to know if this unusual good health

Looking at a search i did for deaths between 1900 and 2005

For a first name and surname (exact spellings only )

ten out of the twenty three results lived to be over 70 !

Five octogenarians

seven deaths were aged 54 to 67

Only 1 child death and one teen death

The 27 year old who died was my great uncle who drowned in a vat 1910

1903 my ggfather died aged74

I haven't identified which death is my second cousin and which a g g uncle or other descendants with same name

The ones in different counties are probably unrelated

Statistically it seems a good record

I would expect there to be more child deaths in early 1900's.

Has anyone else done similar searches ?

Having spent a fortune on credits mostly on Genes Reunited and Scotland's people I.ve now learnt how to search more economically ;
Not quite ready to run a master class but how about a few tips?

1 valuation rolls can be really useful for finding where people are between census for example
1905

The initial search is free so and tells you how many matches then you spend 1 credit to see matches then a further 5 credits to view the document

I ve learnt to alter parameters so I get to see 25 matches on the initial search is not specify the person's first name or allow spelling variant s.  So you may find your ancestors parents siblings or cousins on the same page

Does that make sense or should I give examples ?

Can anyone add other tips please

« on: Monday 16 May 16 00:25 BST (UK)  »
Hi I.m trying to find out what happened to Archibald McDiarmid b1870 and his family

He married Sarah Andrews b1871

In1901 they were in cumbuslang with George age. 10, Sarah 9 ,Mary 7, Elizabeth 5. and baby Andrew

I can't find them in 1911

Archibald is in valuation rolls at Dean's avenue cumbuslang in 1930

But I can't find deaths for him his wife Sarah or his children

His daughter Elizabeth was a baker's saleswoman when she married Andrew macdermid of river road carmyle
in1920

Andrew macdermid/macdermid is listed on rolls from 1925 at deans avenue

He died in 1964 informant was listed as an intimate friend John McDiarmid of Borge crescent  ...could this be a brother or cousin of Elizabeth ? And when did she die ? Did she have any children ? Where else can I look ?
My information so far comes from Scottish people

My grandfather .  Thomas Macdermid kept photos of his Navy mates their football team and variuo groupings .as he is not on the photos himself and the men are not named my aunt does not wish to keep them ,but I feel someone may want them .The football teams are HMS bryony 1921-23 and 1923-25

Other friends are posing in Malta where grandad was in 1930 but their hats say HMS glorious and Gloucester

Any ideas what I can do with these photos

South Africa / Edward Richard Hallis b1872 ;any children in SA
« on: Saturday 20 February 16 01:06 GMT (UK)  »
Edward Hallis was a blacksmith in GB (his father samuel "adopted" my nana in 1900)
Edward Married Lillian Alice Hird in Liverpool in 1897

Edward died in SA in 1942

I see from ship records that he travelled to and from africa
He seems to have come from SA to GB in the  to visit his sister in  Greenfield street Birkenhead
in 1932 1935 and 1939

first evidence i found of him going to SA was 1912

his wife was with her father Thomas Hird in 1901 and I can't find Edward

there is a Mrs L Hallis  housekeeper aged 26 travelling from Liverpool to Cape in 1902
could this be to join her husband there

Is there any evidence of Edward having children in SA ..is he on any censuses
and did he have any children
 with Lillian or anyone else

in 1939  aged 67 he travelled from Mozambique
to  GB (Ashdale  road)

Will be grateful for any pointers

« on: Wednesday 16 December 15 19:25 GMT (UK)  »
I am gradually taking a sabbatical  going from contract to relief hours
in2016

create paid work for self out of this hobby

If you know anyone who does this alreday or who'd like to do trials with me  or just encourage me I'd really appreciate it

Am collecting a dream team already willing to work for fun skill share (always ethical believe in minimum of £10 hour

In spirit of inclusion + accessibility + sharing my findings with those who can't /won't or don't like reading + facts

summarise findings as a story ..getting own descendants /or people with correct regional accents to "act the parts

For visually impaired have large size + zoomable apps

I 'm not very computer savvy so will have a tech team

Children + people who can't comunicate very well can still have star roles by modelling clothes of time ...
#
I 'm lucky that a man I know has just finished teaching a course on making animated films he can tutor me in Jan

+ i know of someone who could help with costumes

I think home-schooled kids could learn history thru this personal method . Will post a trial tomoro if my French learners want to have a change tomorrow .

.Brain storm time ..please don't post all the pitfalls ..just positive for now .or send yr trial versions

MUSIC will be very important in my family ..protest songs + even A john Lennon connection but I'm not doing father's story yet .

Thanks in advance
