The Common Room / Becoming younger on ships
« on: Tuesday 07 July 15 21:53 BST (UK)  »
Our relations who travelled to US in 1905 confused me by becoming younger ...especially the women .

In 1901 census                                                1905 on boats ages

Father was 46                                                          50

mother 36                                                               still 36

Girls M 20                                                                      22

B 18                                                                             20

T 10                                                                                  4 misprint for 14?

E 4                                                                                5

births from Russia + GB + school records indicate that the GB ages were accurate but once in USA they tended to stick to their new ages for marriages  ,census , naturalisation etc

E 's gravestone says b1901 died 1987 her family would have been surprised to learn that she was closer to 90 than the 86 yrs attributed .

The father was transcribed as 35 on 1905 NY census but I think that is just a mispo for 55 ;

Any explanation why ?

NB Don't Dismiss ancestors who don't exactly match
it's worth considering the  "known" facts could still be several years out !

Lancashire / too many babies births + deaths close together
« on: Tuesday 07 July 15 16:51 BST (UK)  »
Sana + samuel Fellman had 6 children ;3 still living in 1910

If my research is correct they had Taube in 1890
 Kahya in 1891

In 1891 they travelled to manchester  where Taube died (age given as 0 )
Golda was born in 1892

the other possible dead babies are Samuel FelDman died 1892 aged 1
and Israel Fellman  b 1894 + died 1984
or another Taube  Fellman died 1984

khaya ,Golda + Esther b1897  survived

are  the deaths from the same family would sending for death certificates be the only way to satisfy my curiosity .

would  babies have graves ?  Cumpsall Cemetary ?

the family were living at Bury New road or Nightingale st in these years . Ihave threads about searching the descendants  in USA + ancestors in Russian Latvia

Any advice/ opinions gratefully received

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Jewish name changes
« on: Tuesday 07 July 15 13:40 BST (UK)  »

I've been trying to sort out my ggfather's Russian/latvian born half siblings

but can't work out  if the girl who was born named Khaya  could have become Matilda in GB in the 1890's
+ if Taube's name changed to Gertrude
how likely is that ?

the English born ones were Golda + Esther
maybe Golda became Gertrude
Esther  was Estelle in USA by 1910

what other FIRST  name changes have you come across ?

Their mother was Sheina in Russia ,Sana in manchester ,jane in birkenhead + jeannie in USA
father changed from Leiser-mendel, to mendel to  Lazarus to Samuel   so a very difficult family to follow

Scotland / granma's Bloch /Black cousins
« on: Sunday 05 July 15 23:25 BST (UK)  »
Any idea how i can find out what became of my grandma's cousins after 1911

Am looking for children of Benjamin Bloch   + Rebecca nee Fellman  both born late 1860's  Russia
they married in manchester in 1896
the children  from 1911 cencus Dundee were ;geiss-eida aged 13
 Dina   11yrs
sarah aged 9
Esther 8
Minnie 8
Barnet 2
Rosie 1

their eldest son Elias should be aged 12 but is not with them ....I didn't find a record of his death so he could be elsewhere

Haven't found records of any marriages
I know Rebecca (+Benjamin )Bloch were  living in  Glasgow in 1920 as listed as next of kin on my ggfather's hospital records .
Benjamin Bloch died aged 75 in 1944 in Glasgow + Rebecca lived til 1960 aged 88

I hope their children lived long too  and wonder if any also emigrated to USA .

Any help on this one greatly appreciated ;I doubt if they  angliscised their names to Black as Rebecca's death records maintained the Bloch spelling but her mother's name is given as "Edith"  russian records has her as Geis-Ada so maybe Rebecca's eldest daughter also reverted to a more British sounding 1st name  .

i have a board on USA site re the Fellman cousins   http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=702215.msg5519415#msg5519415

Scotland / McFarlane Agnes or christine
« on: Tuesday 05 May 15 06:57 BST (UK)  »
I have my 3 x grandmother appeariing as Agnes Mc farlane on census of 1901 with husband Duncan  aged 75 with + son John and his family

I have nt seen records but told  from past family research she married Duncan Macdermid 22/06/1850

they appear on other census with  their children ;
 duncan b1859 ,alexande b1866  walter ?+ john c1864 and malcolm  my 2xggfather

Only seen transcriptions but no middle name was given

Just SEEN oRIGINAL COPY OF  death cert son Malcolm and it lists his mothers name as Christine ? McFarlane

any ideas WHY ?

she may have been  daughter of Walter + Margaret Machen Mcfarlane she did have a younger sister whose name was spelt Christian in 1841 census .

+ a younger brother John (when her grandchildren emigrated USA they were taken in by a John mcfarlane ..but not necessarily the same family

there are lots of Mc Farlane 's (we have conections on grandma's side too) + agnes was popular ..I think christine may have been less common

Any help eliminating ,identifying or explaining will be gratefully received

ps research into macdermid family is on the Lanarkshire sub forum

wondering how /why  a surface worker  James Duff Black b1893 scotland  and a bleach worker Jeannie Kyle Macdermid from Scotland ended up in New Zealand where + when did they meet + marry  did they have any children?

Jeannie was my great auntie in 1911 she was a single bleach worker aged 22

3 of her siblings emigrated to USA in 1923 (their details on US forum)
but

i can't find evidence of her travel to NZ or of James Duff . My sister thinks they went to Australia first but I don't know where this information is from .

any more info available on this couple ?

the couple were together in 1928 + in 1957 electoral roll James is listed as a mill hand

I'd like to find out if my grandfathers siblings managed to escape from poverty when they left Scotland  and how many cousins my father actually had ;
in 1923  Agnes b1885 who married JAMES ROBERTSON  travelled with son James Robertson aged 3
and her siblings James aged 22  tinsmith+ Chrissy Macdermid  aged 16 umbrella maker .
James married Sarah Ross in 1925 Brooklyn
they had  at least 2 children     James Kyle MacDermid 1930 d 1977

Chrissy 1907-1992 married John H Kelley b1906 also left Scotland 1923
they also had at least 2 children born in the 1930's

Their contact in USA was a cousin or uncle John mcfarlane

youngest brother John  b1910  travelled in1929
passage paid by his brother so presumably James had got a good job
he died in 1982 aged71 but i don't know if he married or had children .

Any help appreciated

youngest brother John b1910 travelled 6years later
