Leicestershire / Virtual history tours .
« on: Sunday 18 August 24 07:40 BST (UK)  »
I have been on several guided historical  tours of Leicester with different themes .

One man who leads these has also made video clips called "hidden histories of Leicester "

Medieval & Roman Britain .

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to add a link
But they come up on YouTube searches

Mr Butler is a great guide

He also does cycle tours which cover the same routes as videos

Occupation Interests / Groom coachmen to cab proprietor TOTTMAN
« on: Saturday 17 August 24 19:49 BST (UK)  »
I would like to know more about the jobs and businesses of the TOTTMAN
dynasty

In 1881
 WILLIAM TOTTMAN b1850
Born in Hereford to a hay binder was a cab driver in Bloomsbury London

His brother George B 1837 was a cab proprietor

I can't  find either of them in 1871

Their sisters Ann 1840&  Louisa 1847b& Eliza 1859 married a wheelwright a cab driver + a  cooper

By 1891
Williams sons George 1876 & William TOTTMAN were also cab drivers

& 1900 William senior is described as cab proprietor

In 1901 William junior is cab driver but someone has added the term groom

Was a distinction made for people who looked after the horses ?
2 Daughters married 2 brothers sons of Thomas BRADFORD also a cabdriver
described as  cab driver & taxi driver in 1911

Was there a difference?

Son Joseph was described as a coachman on marriage and a horse cab driver in 1911

Issac rueban Tottman 1885  was a chauffeur in 1911
+ A housekeeper groom in 1901
Thomas Whitehead TOTTMAN b1888
Was horsekeeper in 1915 on army papers .

Joseph Huxley  b.1789 Hampton Wick London England

Married Elizabeth Emonson there in 1813

Found baptism of most of their 7 children in Kensington
 James 1818
Mark * 1820
John 1824
Twins William.+ Henry 1825
Eleonor 1827
& Elizabeth 1836

In 1847 Joseph of 11 James street  was applying for relief in st Mary abbots parish where he had been living for at least 5 years

Mentions that he had had
*Parish relief from Hampton Wick parish previously

His son John age 24 is described as afflicted and daughter Elizabeth age 15
Presumably the others had left home

But where were they all in 1841  ?

Mark Huxley married Caroline bishop in July 1841 at st Leonard's their address was given as  golden lane
Profession of his father given as cutler

Not found mark or Caroline in 1841

« on: Wednesday 14 August 24 12:20 BST (UK)  »
I found this in a search for Caroline Bishop B 1838

I'd like to know more about her carer Elizabeth  Pearce ?  Is my reading of her profession correct
Taker of children to nurse .

I wonder what the situation of the other children was and what became of them

Caroline was born to single mother Caroline Bishop
Her presumed father was listed on her baptism as Enoch stock
At 13 she was a servant

Lancashire / Who is Minnie SMITH nee ROBERTS
« on: Monday 20 May 24 17:58 BST (UK)  »
I have some high matches to 2 Smith cousins with tiny trees.i know from DNA matches & other clues that the connection is thru their grandmother
Whose maiden name they don't have on trees but is ROBERTS

They have her as first name Minnie married to Richard Smith no dates or locations

After following false Kirkman trails I eventually worked out that
The cousins  respective fathers were
Dereck 1920  m Kirkman +
( grandson. Told me his grandmother was minnie )

Thomas F C SMITH 1922 -1969
m.Howley (tree has that maternal. grandma as Minnie )
Grandfather Richard SMITH from bury Lancashire.

DNA amounts lead to Minnie having the grandparents Dorcas JONES+ James ROBERTS

One tree that I'm now helping with has
her as being Mary Ann ROBERTS B 1895 to single mother Harriet Rebecca ROBERTS
1872

I don't know where that information came from ..no sources
I have Harriet.Rs death as 1893 at the mine  where she worked .( In which case she could be Minnie's mother unless Minnie was born earlier)

If I had records I don't know where they are this could be from research done by a relative in the 1970s

Where do I go from here ?.

England / Robert BARROW from where ?.
« on: Friday 17 May 24 14:46 BST (UK)  »
I have different possible town of origin for Robert BARROW

So I can't look for his birth or baptism or early census

In 1861 he was age 33 a sapper & royal engineers

Described as soldier on marriage to Amelia RULE June 1861  Gillingham Kent

& In news articles in July & August  same year .

In 1871 he is a fishmonger birthplace given as Hastings
In 1881 he is a provisions dealer birthplace Chatham

Information was found about his wife & children in this post which is wrongly on Irish forum

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=882066.msg7548153#msg7548153

But I can't get back any further
Marriage gives father's name as Robert

I've ruled out the 11year old living with aunt Harriet kingsland in 1851  Sheldich Kent

There are lots of possibilities in Lancashire

He is not son of Robert Barrow rope maker + of Bolton lancs
