Hello 'Trish'

I had much of the info that you just posted while I was typing so have erased it. I will mull over the info again and hope I can suggest something. It is rather complicated, isn't it?

Hello hypnobird and a very warm welcome to RootsChat :)

I'm afraid I don't have any answers for you re: John Salt but you might find a clue or two in the following if you haven't looked already....

Did you get the marriage information from the IGI at familysearch.org? If so, did you order in the actual film to your local Family History Center to see what other details there were? If John was from another Parish it should say which one and witnesses may be helpful family members.

Is Louisa, baptized 16 Oct 1814 in Soberton (IGI), one of their children? If so, her baptism record on the relevant film should give John's occupation. They started adding father's occupation in 1813, I believe. This film should also be available to order in through your local FHC for a nominal fee.

In case you don't know whether there is a Family History Center near you, you can search for one at the bottom of the familysearch.org home page. If you can't find a center near you, you could try posting a request for a look-up of the particular Parish Records, mentioning the info you would like to have....someone might have access.

Regards,

Hello :)

Here is the household for the Thomas Hayes (I think) that Lisaw found in the 1871 Census.

From FHL Film C-623

Thomas Hayes, 87, b. Ireland, Married, Farmer, Religion looks like Presbyterian

Eliza Hayes, 64, b. Ireland, Married, same Religion

M?? (possibly Magt - Margaret?) Anderson, 24, b. Ireland, Single, same Religion

Jane Anderson, 14, b. Ont, Single, same Religion, going to school

Unfortunately, relationships are not given.

Hello :)

I might also be tempted to add the fish seller to my tree (you called him James in your last sentence?) b/c it makes sense that Jane would meet her future husband as a result of the common occupation. However, I would not do it without getting the marriage certificate to be sure. It would be a real shame if you ended up with the wrong tree.

Hi again,

My thought about the witnesses was related to whether you knew George's siblings, which you do know. Sometimes siblings are witnesses and can be used to help find families on the censuses, although it wouldn't give relationship to bride or groom on the certificate. But tracing witnesses with the same last name through the censuses might turn up the family. Hope this makes sense? :)

Did you have any luck with the Military Births on findmypast?

Hello Nev :)

If the couple emigrated in 1910, they should be on the 1911 Canadian census. You can search it for free at the link below.

Hi again :)

Haven't turned anything up in 1871 Census so far.

Do you know of any siblings for George Jr.

Can you tell us the names of the witnesses on the marriage certificate? Might find something with a lateral look.
